There had been room enough for her on her own with her pack, but before he got down in the trench with her, he knew it was going to be a tight fit.

Wearing black from head to toe, he was covered, keeping the wind off of his skin and anything visible on his face he'd covered with black camo-stick paint.

Moving as quietly as he'd been trained to do, she hadn't heard or sensed him until he was beside her.

And that, he reasoned, was for the best.

If he'd made noise and startled her in a different way, she might have called out or scrambled away from him. Either of those options might have revealed herself to anyone skulking around in the dark.

Adjusting her body so she was stretched out beside him, he pulled of his night-vision goggles and set them aside where he could reach them when it was needed.

She shifted against him and the subtle friction didn't make things easier for him.

They made them harder.

She made them harder.

"W-when did you come back?"

"A few hours ago."

"A few... okay."

A wind coursed over them and he felt some strands of her hair whip across his chin.

He hated that he was wearing gloves to hide his hands, but he couldn't resist the urge to touch her. He brushed his fingertips across her skin and smoothed her hair behind her ear. "I heard from Olena that you might be here, so here I am."

"So, you came because of Olena."

He heard her tone flatten a little and her body tense a little against him.

Baron touched his hand to the side of her face and, turning his hand, he traced a knuckle down her cheek to the delicate line of her jaw.

It was pitch dark without the moon. Despite that, he swore he could see her in his mind.

"I came here for you, Mahina."

Leaning over her, he placed a soft kiss against her lips.

"I missed you the whole time we were gone." He let out his breath so he could breathe in her scent, turning his head to the side so that their cheeks were nearly touching. "I hated that I couldn't tell you where we were or what we were doing."

"Olena said you were deployed."

He felt a muscle tick in his cheek. It was the truth in a way. It just wasn't exactly what was going on.

"But you weren't, were you?" He heard the pain in her tone, but he didn't know what it was for exactly. "I might not know what Olena and the other women know about you and the other men, where you are at times, but I know that deployments aren't just for a couple of weeks. They didn't even give you a chance to say goodbye to the people who would worry about you."

Baron dropped his chin to his chest and ground his teeth together. He'd done that to her.

He'd left like her like that.

It wouldn't have been such a shock for the other women. Even Tehani who was the newest woman to be folded into the group, knew what it meant when they got 'the call.
