Chapter 8
Victor
âYvette, I need to know the truth, is Hannah going to survive this."
"I can't give you a guarantee, Vic. You know that, but I will do my best. Her system is stronger than it was before and the tumor is only a fraction of the size it was. Those are both good signs."
"But she's still in there fighting for her life right now," I replied with a hint of frustration. "We have a long way to go and we're losing precious time in the fight. If we don't get to her soon, it may be too late."
"Vic, please understand that you aren't alone on this one. We are doing everything possible to save her." Yvette looked at me sternly before continuing. "And it's not just us trying to help her. There are others who are also working hard to save her."
My heart skipped as she said those words. The thought crossed my mind that maybe, just maybe, if I would have caught it sooner she would have had a better chance. But I knew that wasn't true.
"Who?" I asked.
"The person I'm talking about is someone you know well. And I think you'll find his assistance very helpful." Yvette paused for a moment as if searching for the right words. When she continued, her voice was full of conviction. "When we were first discussing what to do with Hannah, I told him that he needed to step up and help us. He agreed, and said he would be in to see her this afternoon."
A rush of excitement surged through me and a smile formed on my face. "This afternoon? Can you tell me what time?"
"Well, he has a busy schedule, so I can't say when exactly, but I'm sure he'll be here before you leave today."
"Will you let me know when he gets here? I would like to speak with him."
"Of course." Yvette reached out and gave my hand a soft squeeze. Then she turned toward the door. "You should be getting back to work now. It's almost lunchtime."
"Thank you, Yvette," I replied while giving her a quick hug.
She walked past me and out of the room. I sat in silence for a few minutes thinking about the fact that Kevin was coming to see Hannah.
I hadn't seen my brother in two years. At least not since I'd arrived at the hospital. We had spoken by phone quite a bit over the last year or so. My conversations with him always seemed rushed and I felt as though they left me feeling uneasy. He never spoke of any major issues he faced; however, he did mention some minor things, such as problems with his marriage. I could hear it in his voice that something was wrong, but he wouldn't elaborate much more than that.
From all outward appearances, Kevin lived an enviable life. His wife, Amy, was beautiful and intelligent. They had a handsome son, Jack, who was on the verge of starting kindergarten. My brother was one of the most successful men I knew.
