Emily waved at Imogen as she passed the office. âThe bids are in for the craft studios.â
Imogenâs pulse quickened. She must be more excited about the work than sheâd realised.
Emily had printed out the bids, and the two women read them through in silence over coffee.
At last, they looked up and Emily grinned. âNo contest, is there?â
Imogen couldnât keep the grin off her face. âWell, Mr Porsche is off the table â I knew heâd want to destroy the folly and build brick sheds. And heâs expensive, too.â
âWhat do you think about our friend with the head cold?â
Imogen shook her head. âWorthy but dull and the price is low â too low. I think his firmâs desperate for the work, cutting too many costs, and a bit shady.â
Emily was chuckling. âSo, weâre left with the gorgeous Brian, who seems to have put his heart and soul into this bid. A reasonable price and some lovely drawings.â She shuffled the bids into a file. âSo, shall I email him with the good news? No, wait, I have a better idea.â She looked at Imogen and chuckled. âIâll phone the unsuccessful candidates and you can phone Brian. Heâd love to hear your voice.â
âDonât be silly,â Imogen said, but her heart was still thudding in a most unusual way, and her hand shook as she tapped her phone.
Brianâs reaction was everything she could have wanted. âThatâs wonderful news,â he said, warmly. âI canât wait to get started. Can I come and talk to you about it? Sort out all the details?â
And before she knew it, Imogen had agreed to spend the afternoon with him. Her trip to see Jenny could wait for a day or two. Suddenly, the sun seemed to shine more brightly and the grey autumn world looked more colourful. Of course, Brian was bound to be married, but even so, she was going to enjoy talking with him again. She didnât need a man to look after her â just some sensible conversation with a man who thought about things the same way she did.
