Chapter Eleven

Rohan headed back to Durham around eleven. Stupid when he had to be at work at six in the morning, but for once in his life he didn’t care.

He could still feel Solei’s arms around him, still taste her in his mouth. Smell her. Solei was imprinted on his skin and bones. His body felt alive in a way it never had, still attuned and vibrating with the pleasure of the sensation of sharing her body and hearing her gasps of pleasure.

Best day of his life. Absolutely best. By miles.

Best… His phone rang. He scowled seeing Rani’s name on his car’s screen. But he knew she wouldn’t let up.

But damn. He wished his buzz could have lasted until he got on the freeway.

“Yeah,” he answered.

“Why are you still driving?”

“Why are you calling?”

“Rohan,” Rani’s voice was nearly a whisper, and he had to close his sunroof so the night air didn’t tear away her voice. “I’m worried.”

“Why?” he straightened. “What’s wrong? What’s happened?” He could turn around. He could…

“I’m worried about you and Solei. You didn’t see yourself with her.”

He shook his head at Rani’s logic. Or lack of it. “I was with her,” he said, striving for patience. He might not be a man particularly in touch with his feelings according to Mrs. Bukar. But he wasn’t totally divorced from his reality.

“Rohan, she’s really into you,” Rani said slowly as if he’d suddenly lost fifty IQ points.

“What woman wouldn’t be?” he teased, wanting to deflect Rani. He had, after all, been accused of being the golden boy and the golden son of Charlotte by more than his immediate family.

“And you’re really into her,” Rani said. “This is going to be a disaster for you both,” Rani was still loud whispering, which over his speakers sounded melodramatic, like the middle school emo band that Rani had formed for a hot minute.

“Rani, I am not some clueless high school kid at a dance crushing on the popular girl. We just spent a couple of days together.”

Everything inside of him rejected that characterization.

“Rohan, she’s an artist. She’s spontaneous. She’s free-thinking and casual. Everything you’re not.”

“And you know this how?”

And why am I engaging?

“I emailed her my first survey, the one about love languages and hers is totally different from yours.”

“You didn’t email me the survey.”

“I don’t have to, Rohan. I know you. And you wouldn’t have taken it. You know you wouldn’t have.”

“Pretty busy finishing up my residency.”

And the fact that Rani felt like she could take his survey didn’t sit well at all.

“You use work as a shield. And Solei’s love language is spending time together. Opposites may attract but they don’t last.”

“Reminding you that I met her last Saturday.” He merged onto the highway home.

And spent most of today with her, making love for hours.

But it hadn’t been all sex. They’d walked to a grocery store, Solei googling recipes. Then they’d cooked together. He’d never spent such a relaxed, enjoyable afternoon and evening with a woman. They’d watched the sunset
