Let’s say you’ve found that conflict with others puts up a lot of gratitude roadblocks. You could develop a plan to improve your relationships that includes more active listening. If thoughts are the main obstacle, you could begin to challenge them by asking, “How do I know that for sure?” You could also meet any of these roadblocks by stepping into the meadow of acceptance. You could say to yourself, I see this roadblock to gratitude is here. I am not going to push against it. Instead, I will wait patiently for it to pass.

When you feel ready, you can try to pivot from acceptance toward gratitude. As you recall, in the open field, you are reaching for anything that could be a gift. You could enter that field with a thought like Even though I am feeling down and stressed, one thing I am thankful for is…

Alternatively, you could begin with self-compassion: I am having a hard time right now. I understand that I am in pain and suffering. Is there anything within this very challenging moment that I am glad is here? What’s one thing I do have going for me?

As you explore your roadblocks, you might discover that positive emotions and social fulfillment are good gratitude door–openers. When we feel happy and enjoy who we are with, we often can see the gifts of life more clearly. Other parts of this program, like humor, strengths, and love, can also help open those doors, by generating strong positive feelings. You may want to shift your focus to these areas if you are consistently hitting a wall or not having success with the above roadblock-busters. If you do shift focus, keep a lookout for doors into thankfulness, so you can be ready to step through them.

Before we move forward, I want to stress the importance of having realistic gratitude expectations. Including gratitude in a positivity program does not assume you will or should be in a continuously grateful state. The goal of this week is to increase the frequency with which you make contact with the gifts of life, even just a little bit. One small extra moment of gratitude counts as a success! You may find these moments more easily at times by directing gratitude inward. That’s where we are going next.
