Training Jargon and Techniques

It’s helpful for you to learn basic definitions of the terms that you’ll hear when you start to train your dog. First it’s important to get over one common misconception: the idea that using food rewards in training will doom you to a life of needing these rewards to get your dog to perform certain behaviors. What many people do not understand is that by using rewards they are conditioning their dogs to behave a certain way when given a certain cue (they say “Sit” and the dog sits). Conditioning is very powerful and if done with enough repetition, will produce a behavior that is like a reflex. Eventually you can fade out the treats and still get the behavior.
