The Finer Details of Design

Well-designed images clearly guide the viewer through the intended pattern in the layout to gain a better understanding of the content. When a visual appears, the “eye movement” of the viewer is affected by the design elements. The “eye” seeks a focal point, or anchor, from which to begin examining the image to process the information.

The anchor, or “starting point,” varies, depending on the nature of the visual (text, graphic, data-driven chart, photo, diagram, map, etc.). For languages that read left-to-right, such as English, the starting point on a typical text chart is in the upper-left portion of the visual, where the first line of text is likely to appear. But not all slides are designed the same. Text sizes change, data-driven charts are used, artwork appears, lines are drawn, and shapes are placed in varying spots. As you design visual content for your learners, use anchoring to help guide the eye of the viewers to those elements on the image you feel are most important. The most common anchoring techniques involve graphic elements (shapes and artwork); revelations (builds and overlays); and text arrangements (parallel structures, typefaces and fonts, and capitalization methods.)
