When Shari came to, she was aware first of all of a dull, throbbing pain in her head. She opened her eyes a slit and the light in the room made her flinch, a small movement that she immediately regretted since the pain in her head doubled in intensity. She remained immobile for a while, and then ventured to open her eyes once more. She could see that she was in a small, white, unfamiliar room, but dared not turn her head to try to see any more.

A small sound clued her in to the fact that she was not alone in the room. She turned her head slowly and painfully, in tiny increments, and saw Wanda huddled in a chair, staring at her with huge, frightened eyes, tears streaming down her face.

“Where am I?” she managed at last.

“In the hospital. You’ve had an accident. Thank God you’re conscious.” She pressed a button outside of Shari’s line of vision and a nurse bustled in, examined Shari, and bustled out again. She returned with a doctor who asked Shari a series of questions which seemed to annoy her until she realized that he was just doing what he was supposed to in order to assess her condition.

As the pain gradually eased she drifted off to sleep, aware only that the baby was fine, that the baby would be all right.

The next time she gingerly opened her eyes there was daylight in the room, and the pain in her head seemed to have lessened somewhat. Wanda was no longer there, and Shari was about to try and sit up when a different nurse came in.

“Do you need more painkillers?” she inquired.

“Yes, please.” Her attempt to sit up had started her head pounding again.

“Here you go. Your cousin sat with you all night, you know. I had to chase her out of here when I came in this morning. She’ll bring you some clothes later.”

Shari glanced down at her hospital gown. She pulled the sheet up to her chin and asked, dreading to know.

“What happened?”

“You got a nasty gash on the side of your head. You were lucky. The airbag saved the rest of you, but you must have turned aside at the last moment and smashed your head against the door.”

“And Ronnie? The driver?”

“Minor cuts, I believe. He was discharged last night.”

Shari recalled those seconds before the impact. “The red car came out of nowhere, straight at us...”

“You rest now. Don’t worry about what happened.” Her voice was firm. She noted
