Chapter Thirteen

The family dinner at Blanchard’s was surreal to Desi. It was a good example of how drastically her life had changed. There were so many people who were happy about the wedding the next day, and they accepted what Harry meant to her. Harry was talking to Jude and Monica, but she gazed at her often enough for her to know she was on Harry’s mind.

“Are you feeling okay?” Keegan asked. The head chef of Blanchard’s wasn’t working that night but had been giving orders since she and Sept arrived. In the months Desi had been with Harry, Keegan had become a good friend and had invited her to dine in the kitchen often. She and Rachel had come without Harry for lunch, and she enjoyed Keegan’s friendship. Keegan got the credit for inviting some of the people who’d attended her show.

“I’m excited enough that I’m trying to ignore my aching feet tonight. Thank you again for doing this for us.” The dinner for everyone attending tomorrow was Keegan and Sept’s wedding gift.

“Please, I’m having children with Sept, and if I’ve learned anything from the Savoie family, it’s that having someone who can set bones on speed dial is a good thing. Besides that, we love you guys, and I’m so happy for you both.” Keegan was a beautiful woman who, like Harry, could’ve had anyone. She’d picked Sept, who was a cop from a cop family, and they made it work. She thought of them when she was insecure of her place in Harry’s life. She didn’t need to be a doctor or any other high-flying professional. She could just be herself.

“Sept mentioned you were still having morning sickness.” She knew Keegan was having twins. Sept reminded her a lot of Harry, and she was worried about the size of her baby, so she couldn’t imagine having two at once.

“That’s the worst name for that since it’s all-the-time sickness,” Keegan said and laughed. “It’s getting better, but work has been a bear.”

“You should teach Savoie to cook something to give you a break,” Harry said, putting her arms around Desi from behind.

“Savoie knows how to cook plenty. If you ask her, she could teach you a couple things.” Keegan winked and excused herself to talk to the staff.

“I love you,” Harry said when they were alone. “Tomorrow I’m finally going to get what I’ve wanted all my life.”

She leaned back against Harry and smiled. “What’s that?”

“I get you, and I get to call you my wife.” Harry kissed the back of her neck, making her shiver. “That we don’t have to wait much longer for the baby is a bonus.”

The baby was active and Harry’s hands on her seemed to rev the gymnastics. She put her hands over Harry’s and really leaned back into her. This was her safe place, her person, her home. “Who knew I was that smart in high school.”

Harry kissed the back of her neck again. “Thank you for saying yes, and for loving me.
