The first letters to Marie-Claude, with a return address that reads “Miss A. Duchesne, Heathfield, 21 Kenver Avenue, London N12 England,” resonate with an enthusiasm that disappeared at the time of the camp at S. She is pleased to be staying with people like the Portners, who are “in tune with the times,” and who are “throwing a garden party in three weeks.” She is pleased the children, Brian, twelve, and Jonathan, eight, do not require much looking after since they are quite grown-up. She describes the house as “very beautiful, with red wall-to-wall carpet and mirrors, a kind of American style.” She mentions “their religion, which is Jewish, and the custom of Friday night dinner, with candles on the table.” She lists the places she has visited: the National Gallery, “with Manet, Monet, Renoir, The Source,” St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Madame Tussauds museum “with the Chamber of Horrors,” the Tower of London, the Docks, Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, Piccadilly Circus. After writing “I love my life, I like to be cosmopolitan, I would like to visit the whole earth and love it all,” she adds, with a touch of vanity—and, as the girl who not so long ago had never left her hole, with unconscious revenge on her more socially advanced friend: “Back in Yvetot, we might have said that it was you who were destined for a life of wandering and me for a settled life, no? Events truly transform us.”
