Chapter Nineteen
Mickey had not been into the club this early in a very long time. It looked to her as if Savannah was finishing up her first set and was about to go on break.
She made a quick sweep of the room and did not see Patrice, so made her way back to the office. Mickeyâs gut tightened when she found the office empty, so she dropped off her hat and coat. As she headed back down the hall, she ran into Savannah.
To say it was awkward was an understatement, but Mick tried to make the best of it.
âLook, I am really sorry I accused you of working for someone to keep me under. That was wrong. You were just helping me out. In my line of work people are first guilty, then they gotta prove me wrong. Sometimes that spills over and clouds my judgment.â
Savannah stood tall. âApology accepted.â
âAs a matter of factâ¦â Mickey pulled out a pad and pen, ââ¦hereâs the number of the fella what can, letâs say, give someone a new life.â Mickey handed her the paper. âI know Patrice. Sheâd be real sad if you had to leave sudden-like.â Mickey pointed to the paper Savannah now had in her hand. âThis guy can make it so a person can settle in one place and relax a little.â Mickey watched her fiddle with the paper, then wring her hands. âLeast I can do for a friend what helped me out.â She saw tears in Savannahâs eyes. âNow I gotta find Trice, ok?â
She stared at Mick with the oddest look on her face. âYes. Thank you, Mickey,â Savannah whispered.
Mickey nodded and made her way past. At the door she turned and said, âAnd Savannah?â
âYes?â
âIf trouble comes does come knocking, donât go someplace else. You find me. I know some people who can make that trouble go away, too, permanent like.â Mickey watched a tear roll down the songbirdâs cheek.
Savannah nodded her head and then went into her dressing room.
In the club, Mickey saw Tony. âHave you seen Patrice?â
âSheâs at her table withâ¦someâ¦people.â
Mickey saw a snarl on his lip. âThanks, Tony,â she said over her shoulder as she made her way over. Mick saw Patrice surrounded by dirty cops, and her hackles rose. The fact that Basil sat with her should have been some consolation, but it wasnât.
Patrice looked up and saw Mickey. She was never so glad to see anyone in all her life. Having spent the last hour with this crew, she had a better appreciation for what Mickey must have to do in her daily life. Patrice would be decidedly happy to never have to do this again.
âThought I might find you all here.â She heard a few grumbled hellos, but only had eyes for Patrice.
âWhy, hello,â Patrice said. âCome to join us?â
âSeems a little crowded,â she said under her breath. âActually, I wondered if you would honour me with a dance?â Mickey offered her hand to Patrice.
âOf course. Excuse me, everyone.â Patrice slid out and took Mickeyâs hand.
