The clerk at City Hall left Melody a very happy message the next morning. The building she owned was not considered an historical one. There was no evidence that it was ever considered as such. Mildred Thumper’s threat was an empty one.

Yet, the news did nothing to cheer Melody up. Riley’s truck was gone when she woke up. He’d quietly returned to retrieve it.

Riley didn’t come in that morning, but Jason, David and the Tizdales did. They worked tirelessly on the building and she kept busy tending to the foursome outside and the customers streaming into the shop. By one-thirty, Ginger came in to take over with the customers so Melody could divert all of her attention to the greenhouse. By four that afternoon, the framework was nearly done, and an electrician would be out the next day to finish the wiring.

“No Riley, huh?” David said as he wiped at his brow with a rag.

Melody was surprised that vampire shifters sweat. “No. But I haven’t tried calling him. I just…” She’d told them what had happened in the early morning hours. Everyone seemed stunned by Mildred Thumper’s actions, but weren’t sure what Melody should do.

Jason, David and Melody glanced at each other. Melody knew the other two had made a mental recall of the Villains with Teeth they and the Blackstone family had recently dealt with in the past year. Yeah. In their shared opinion, it was nice to have a no-teeth villain.

Only, Melody wasn’t so sure about that when it came to Mildred Thumper. It felt like the old bat had bitten into her soul.

“I knew we shouldn’t have spoken her name more than three times,” Mike Tizdale said as he shrugged on his jacket.

Small flakes of snow started falling, almost imperceptible, as Melody turned to see Mildred Thumper’s car pull into the drive and then onto the grass as she stopped it in front of the foursome. Melody heard the front door open and slam shut and caught the flare of Ginger’s red hair as she came around the car from inside the store, her coat zipped and her hands in her pockets. Ginger was always good at sensing trouble.

And the look on Mildred’s face was full of trouble.

“Where is he?” Mildred screeched as she got out of her car and stomped toward Melody.

“Damn,” Lori said behind Melody, and she knew exactly why Lori said it.

Mildred looked terrible. It’d been hard to see the details of her face in the light of the
