Chapter Twelve

Marina sat on a fold-out chair on the green, just outside her family crib. She did not know what else to do; Daniel had driven her straight from the river to her family crib in the late afternoon, not even suggested they go to his crib. He had silently unloaded the cooler bag, her daypack and her large sketch pad, carried them all inside and set them down in the lounge. That left her to walk unevenly behind him into the crib, virtually meeting him on the way out as he went with only a muttered comment she didn’t catch. He had returned almost immediately with her duffel bag from his crib, left again with a terse farewell, a casual wave in the direction of her father and Rose who happened to be in the lounge.

Now the barbeque was in full swing with locals and holidaymakers alike clustered happily on the green, coming over to Marina, socialising over drinks and handfuls of potato chips and nuts. Marina found herself caught up in the spirit of the evening, genuinely pleased to be back at Toko Mouth, despite everything that had happened. She acknowledged jokes and comments about her getting lost the night before with good humour, referred frequently to Daniel finding her, the assistance from several locals as well as Lance, Blair, and Sean.

Marina was also approached by the owners of the area of land adjacent to where Daniel had found her; she spoke to them at length, responded to their genuine interest about her work, discussed her plans. As they moved away she saw Daniel on the other side of the group, talking animatedly to another group of locals, clearly leading the conversation. Then as she watched discreetly he walked over towards the barbeques that sat side by side, started to prepare to cook the steak and sausages that were stacked by the hot plates.

“Marina, thanks for your help with those salads. And the dessert.”

She smiled automatically as Rose spoke to her, sat on a chair next to her. “No worries,” she said politely. “At least I can more or less assemble them leaning on the kitchen bench,” she added. She forced herself not to think of her comments to Kath the night before.

Rose paused. “I wasn’t sure whether to expect you back this afternoon, or not.” She said nothing further, obviously hoped Marina would enlighten her as to what the current situation was between her and Daniel. Marina remained silent, conscious that both her father and Rose had been surprised by her return to the crib, that Daniel had not even stayed for a coffee or a chat. Marina had vaguely referred to her ankle, Daniel’s own tiredness after a long week at work, hoped that the tenuous explanation would satisfy their questions. Now Marina looked up as her father came over, pinned a smile on her face as he asked about her ankle. I can still have an enjoyable evening, even though Daniel hasn’t said one word to me for hours.
