CHAPTER 49

Paris

Alex had made an appointment for a facial massage, a mid-winter treat. As she arrived, she could tell from the esthetician’s flustered face that patience was in order. On a low marble table, part of the décor designed to vaguely suggest a boudoir, were the sorts of magazines one never wanted to be seen buying, but that one eagerly read in waiting rooms. Somehow a copy of L’Express had found its way among the escapades of Europe’s nobility.

Alex leafed through it distractedly, not reading until an article caught her eye: “The Rape of French Churches.” It was a story about the theft of artworks in French churches, most in the countryside, without the benefit of video surveillance. Chalices, sculptures, paintings, all had disappeared into the illegal underground market.

A name caught Alex’s eye: Charles-François Daubigny. Curious, she continued reading: Charles-François Daubigny was a nineteenth-century painter of the Barbizon School and an important influence on the Impressionist painters that came after him. He is known for his landscapes and river scenes, but a rare seascape — Storm Over the Sea — has recently disappeared from a small church near Roscoff. Due to its unusual subject matter, art experts say the painting could be worth as much as eight hundred and fifty thousand Euros if sold at auction.

Inserted in the story was a photo of Storm Over the Sea.

Her heart beat a little faster as Alex realized that she’d seen this painting very recently.
