Chapter 8: A Dicey Game

As it turned out, a long, sharp sliver of glass had sliced, lengthwise, into my shin while I was on the mattress. In the trauma of the moment, I hadn’t even noticed. The glass shifted when I moved up those stairs, which started the bleeding that Peggy had noticed. Even coming up the stairs, I was so concerned about finding Nick in such bad shape that it wasn’t until I tried to stand that the pain hit me. The EMTs numbed the area, removed the glass, and cleaned the cut. Then they, literally, glued me backed together. It was a nice clean slice rather than a jagged tear, so it was an easy fix, according to the baby-faced EMT.

Other than needing to confirm that my tetanus shot was up to date, I was fine. Carol and I had a few scrapes and bruises, but we were allowed to leave after the EMTs checked us over. Jack gave me a piercing look when the EMTs told us how fortunate we were not to have been more badly injured.

From the condition of Nick’s face, I assumed the large man who’d fallen off the deck had beaten Nick the same way he’d beaten Marco Novak and for the same reason, whatever that was. Maybe Marco Novak had answers, but Nick didn’t.

After Nick had been hauled down the stairs, one of the EMTs told Jack how lucky Nick was that we showed up when we did. He couldn’t have survived much longer. I felt sick as I considered how big a role luck had played in our decision to search for him sooner rather than later.

“So, you’re saying we got to him just in the Nick of time?” Despite the pun, Carol’s face bore streaks of tears rather than her usual prankster smile.

“Why don’t you two skip the gala tonight?” Jack suggested in a sweet, comforting tone, holding my hand. “Brett and I can stand in for you. We can handle the heat if Max objects.”

“No,” we both quickly responded, more loudly than necessary. Jack didn’t even try to argue with us at that point. He shifted back into detective mode, although he continued to hold my hand.

“Was Nick able to tell you anything about what happened or why?” Jack asked.

“All he did was mumble, although when Georgie asked him what happened, he tried to tell us,” Carol sniffled and dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

“We both heard him say a game bit, Jack. I’m certain he meant gambit.”

“As soon as they let me speak to him, I’ll ask him the same question and see what he says. I’m sure you two heard him right even though he got it wrong.”

“Can we go now? I stink.” Carol was almost pleading with Jack.

“Me too,” I added. “I’ll call Lee and tell her we’re done for the day. Will you fill me in about what goes on at the meeting with Ralph?” I asked.

“I will, assuming I have this problem wrapped up soon enough to get there myself.
