MATILDA

Matilda paced around the empty house.

The place was enormous, filled with corridors and dust-filled objects. Her mind would not cease. It insisted on torturing her with memories of Christopher. He still clogged her thoughts. She was sure she was slipping away from her sanity the more she pondered him.

Matilda knew, though, that this was all her fault. She’d pushed him away. She’d demanded more than he was willing to give. Caged in, he’d said he felt. But she’d never meant him any harm. She’d simply feared living a life filled with his absence.

Here she was now, alone in this big house without her Christopher. And the abundant need to have him again grew inside her with every step.

“I need you,” Matilda cried into the air, knowing no one would hear. No one would answer.

Christopher was everything she’d ever wanted in life. He’d made her into who she was. He’d given her hope, and meaning, and purpose. But just as he’d given it, he’d taken it away.

Christopher was gone. Irrevocably gone.

Matilda ran her hands through her hair, pulling on it. The physical pain was a pleasant distraction. Her stocked pantry and fridge stared at her, perhaps wondering why she hadn’t eaten in days. She couldn’t. Not without Christopher. She glared right back at them. They were mocking her. They were laughing at her because she’d lost the love of her life.

“I need you, Christopher,” Matilda whispered, defeat running through her. She fell to her knees, looking down the empty hallway.

The knocking on the front door startled her. It was likely her cleaning lady. She’d come every day this week, although Matilda had refused to open the door every single time.

When will she finally give up?

Matilda got back on her feet and walked to the door. Through the window, she saw the hunched old lady who scrubbed her toilets for the lowest wage. Sighing, Matilda finally opened the door for her since she was so insistent on entering.

“Hello, Ms. Matilda,” Benny said, a worried look in her eyes. “Have you been gone all this time?”

Matilda shook her head. Her knees trembled, and she had to grip her hands to the door to not topple over.

Benny stepped inside, heading straight for the downstairs bathroom. Matilda closed the door and locked it, leaning against it for support. She slid down to the floor once she heard the expected shriek from Benny.

When Benny ran out of the bathroom, her gloved hands were dripping with blood, and her face was wet with tears. There was utter horror in her dark brown eyes when she looked at Matilda on the floor. “What have you done, Ms. Matilda? What have you done!”

Matilda chuckled. “I made him stay. He wanted to leave me, so I made him stay.”

The old maid dug in her apron and pulled out her cell phone with shaky hands.

“Drop it,” Matilda said, her tone hollow but demanding.

Benny took a couple of steps backwards. “No, Ms. Matilda. Please stay where you are.”

Matilda stood while Benny tried to dial.
