CHAPTER NINE
Helen wrapped up her first Monday at the library and walked home. She couldnât help but smile. It was a beautiful evening. The sky was still quite light, but it was turning a lovely shade of lavender. Birds were singing in the trees, and when a cool breeze blew Helenâs hair out of her face, she could smell a hint of the coming autumn.
From Hickory Lane, she could catch little glimpses of the backs of the buildings on Main Street. She could see the twinkling lights that had been strung from one side of the street to the other, and she could hear folksy music coming from the direction of Village Park. Pretty festive for a Monday evening.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps jogging up behind her. She turned to see Annie approaching.
âHey!â Annie called. âHow was your first day?â
âWonderful. You all done at the diner?â
Annie nodded. âThe night shift is on duty. You should come over to Main Street with me.â
âWhy? Whatâs happening over there?â
âMondays on Main,â said Annie. âEvery Monday evening, the shops stay open late and there are special little extras, like a band at the park and food trucks and sometimes booths selling things. The town council came up with the idea as a way of encouraging our weekend tourists to tack an extra day onto their visit.â
âDo we have a lot of tourists here?â Helen dug into her messenger bag and pulled out her keys.
Annie followed her up her front walk. âMostly in the summer and around the holidays, but yeah, a few. Enough to help out the economy but not enough to be a pain.â She laughed.
âThatâs perfect.â Helen opened her door and led Annie into the study, where she flipped on the lamps and set her messenger bag in its place on a side table.
âWow. Youâve really got the place looking great,â said Annie. âYouâre practically done unpacking.â
âI will be soon,â said Helen. She found her wallet in her bag, pulled out a few bills, folded them neatly, and put them in her pocket. âLetâs go. But after this I have to get groceries.â
After a quick stop at Annieâs so Annie could change out of her work clothesâwhich smelled faintly of hamburgersâthey walked over to Main Street. Sure enough, locals and visitors alike were strolling along the sidewalks, stopping off at restaurants and shops, pointing at things in windows. Everything was lit up, and there was an atmosphere of casual fun. Helen and Annie walked and talked, and Helen was struck by the fact that sheâwho had always had a hard time making new friends or trusting peopleâfelt like sheâd known Annie for years. They walked the entire length of the street, vowing to see what all was on offer before they decided what to choose for dinner. They made a visit to the bookshop and enjoyed catching up with Jane Patterson, who was hosting a Monday Madness sale. Helen felt less guilty for picking up a few new books, what with the discount. Eventually, she and Annie ended up at the park, where various different food trucks were parked.
