Eighteen

Whatever Sadie had expected to see once she got downstairs, the scene went beyond anything she could have imagined. Wall-to-wall people filled the pub, most wearing green attire that ranged from plaid jackets to headbands that featured bobbing shamrocks that flashed and lit up. Green beer flowed freely from the bar, with many a gripped mug bearing the traditional beverage. The sea of green swayed back and forth, whether to the live music flowing from a small entertainment stage or as a result of enthusiastic imbibing.

The only spot in the entire room that wasn’t packed was Paddy’s corner, where he stood in either awe or apprehension, watching the crowd. A barrier fence had been set up to secure his safety. Although all the regulars knew of the pig and were used to looking out for him, this wasn’t a normal night, and many had come in from out of town to take part in the festivities.

Raff and Janna were both behind the packed bar counter, filling and serving drinks as fast as possible to crowds of people pressed up against the bar. Grady and Finnian stood against a wall, watching the partying customers together.

With chairs, tables, and barstools all occupied, standing-room-only customers balanced plates of food in their hands, attempting to eat without spilling food or bumping into others. In general, the scene was on the edge of chaos. Yet it was a cheerful chaos, filled with laughter and chatter.

Sadie spotted Detective Ross not far from the pool table, taking in the activity around the room and scanning the crowd in general. When he caught her eye, he made his way over to her, dodging beer mugs along the way.

“Quite a crowd,” Sadie said when he arrived.

“Yes, just as expected.” The detective looked out into the room, presumably taking advantage of the new spot. “This holiday is always like this. I always hope it stays a notch below a riot. Some years have been better than others.”

“Any update on the Quinn Collins case?” Sadie felt the words slip out of her mouth in spite of having promised herself she wouldn’t push him for information.

“Nothing I can share,” Detective Ross said, just as Sadie expected he would.

“I see all the town regulars are here,” Sadie said, hoping it would trigger some commentary.

“So it seems,” the detective said.

“Except I don’t see Drew,” Sadie said. “The guy from that bar up the road.” She realized that made sense. Drew had his own bar to attend to. Even though it wasn’t an Irish pub like O’Paddy’s, it was bound to be busy even if only with customers avoiding the crunch at the pub.

“He may not show up, which would be a good thing,” Detective Ross said. “There’s usually trouble wherever he goes. Better that he keeps it at his own place. Which reminds me. I should run up there and make sure things are under control.”

As the detective headed for the front door, Sadie took another look around the bar, her gaze landing on Paddy’s pen in the corner.
