Peggy spent all morning waiting on customers in The Salty Shipper and Arlene took care of the craft side of the store. Paying for an advertisement in the Spicetown Star had worked in her favor and business was picking up. She was relieved to see traffic growing, because the first week made her nervous about her decision to pursue this venture. She hated to think the bank had been right.

“Good morning, Emily! How is your grandfather doing?” Peggy pushed a shipping label toward Emily Trammel and handed her a pen.

“He’s doing well. I just ran over here to check on him since I had the day off work. How are you?”

“Doing great,” Peggy said as she tapped her finger on the form. “I just need your return address up here and where it’s going at the bottom in the box.”

Emily nodded and leaned forward to write.

“I haven’t seen Mr. Kit in a long time.”

“He doesn’t get out much anymore. I take him to the store, and he runs a few errands on his own, but I feel better if he waits for me to come by. I worry about him driving.”

“I’m sure he loves seeing you!” Peggy peeled the edges of the label, so she could place it on the package.

“I don’t know if you heard, but his debit card number was stolen. That really scared him.” Emily dug into her handbag to pay Peggy.

“I did and I’m sorry to hear he’s going through that, but in case you didn’t know, it’s happening all over town. People are reporting fraudulent charges on their credit cards.”

“Yeah. The chief told me.”

“It’s happening in Paxton, too.” Peggy caught herself before she blamed them for it, remembering Emily lived over there now.

“I made him get a credit card. If he’d been using that instead, they would have replaced the card and removed the charge right away. He doesn’t want to use it, but he doesn’t have a choice right now. He doesn’t have anything else! I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

Peggy didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t imagine what she would do if it happened to her either. “It’s scary.”

Emily nodded.

Peggy handed Emily her credit card back and noticed it had Otis Kittering’s name on it. “There you go. It should be delivered in about 3 days. You tell Mr. Kit I said hello and have him give me a call if he needs anything,”

“I will. Thank you.”

Once Emily left, Peggy picked up her phone and called City Hall. Punching in the extension for Streets and Alleys, she waited for someone to answer. “Rodney! Hi, it’s Peggy Cochran at the Carom Seed Craft Corner. I know you’re working, and I hate to bother you, but I need someone to replace the steel door on the back of my shop for me. Do you know anyone I could call?”

Rodney Maddox was now the supervisor of the Spicetown Streets and Alleys, but he had always been a bit of a handyman on the side.
