If Tur hadnât been sitting, heâd have crumbled. âI donât have much time,â he said, rising.
Mirah ran into her chamber, and before Balashi had a chance to crouch and enter, she slammed the door in his face.
She crashed into Tur. His hands gripped around her waist, pulling her closer. It wasnât enough. He couldnât get her close enough. She cleaved to him and her tight hold opened the door to his soul. For a moment, the world expanded, becoming non-existent, and only Tur and Mirah remained. An infinite void, untainted by Nate, consumed him and he longed to take Mirah and dive inside.
âWhat they did to you, I couldnât make them stop.â
Desperation, guilt and shame laced her words, bringing him back to the chaos surrounding them. He had to make her see she wasnât to blame. âItâs all right, I understand. This isnât your fault.â
She shook her head. âIâll wield.â She grabbed his hand and dragged him to an opening in the rock wall. âYou can escape from here.â
âYou canât take on Shemyaza and all his Nephilim alone. I wonât allow it.â He shook her hand away. The woman was infuriating, sacrificing herself to see him safe.
She glared at him, stubborn fury dancing in her eyes. âI should never have forced you to stay. Go. Go home, rule your people. Live.â
Fury wasnât her only emotion, regret, overwhelming and filled with remorse lingered beneath her words. He couldnât tell if she was pushing him away for his sake, Nateâs or hers. âIs that all I am? A complication you want gone?â
She recoiled, her head jolting back. He hadnât meant to say it. Fear. Fear ruled his thoughts and crept up unaware. He wanted to win her back and tell her the truth about how Nate reeled her into his trap. How sheâd been young and mistaken love for a false safety net. If he told her Nate resorted to torture, how would she react? Thanks to being healed, he didnât even have any proof.
This might be his last chance to tell her whatâs on his heart and heâd be a damned fool to waste it, regardless of what she thought, but he didnât have time. Balashi might rip him away at any moment, and he refused to leave her this way. He had to convince her to destroy the portals.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean that.â
âYouâll not die for my sake.â
If nothing else, she wouldnât want his blood on her conscience. She was doing it again. Taking the blame not only for everyone elseâs actions but hers as well.
He held back from brushing his hand through her hair. âItâs not your fault. Whatever the outcome, I wonât betray you and Iâll not betray myself.â
She trembled against him, and he tightened his hold, powerless to do anything other than offer her a brief moment of reassurance they both knew wouldnât last.
âMirah, listen to me, youâre in danger more than you know. I realise how much Galia and Ammo mean to you, but you have to destroy the portals.
