If Tur hadn’t been sitting, he’d have crumbled. ‘I don’t have much time,’ he said, rising.

Mirah ran into her chamber, and before Balashi had a chance to crouch and enter, she slammed the door in his face.

She crashed into Tur. His hands gripped around her waist, pulling her closer. It wasn’t enough. He couldn’t get her close enough. She cleaved to him and her tight hold opened the door to his soul. For a moment, the world expanded, becoming non-existent, and only Tur and Mirah remained. An infinite void, untainted by Nate, consumed him and he longed to take Mirah and dive inside.

‘What they did to you, I couldn’t make them stop.’

Desperation, guilt and shame laced her words, bringing him back to the chaos surrounding them. He had to make her see she wasn’t to blame. ‘It’s all right, I understand. This isn’t your fault.’

She shook her head. ‘I’ll wield.’ She grabbed his hand and dragged him to an opening in the rock wall. ‘You can escape from here.’

‘You can’t take on Shemyaza and all his Nephilim alone. I won’t allow it.’ He shook her hand away. The woman was infuriating, sacrificing herself to see him safe.

She glared at him, stubborn fury dancing in her eyes. ‘I should never have forced you to stay. Go. Go home, rule your people. Live.’

Fury wasn’t her only emotion, regret, overwhelming and filled with remorse lingered beneath her words. He couldn’t tell if she was pushing him away for his sake, Nate’s or hers. ‘Is that all I am? A complication you want gone?’

She recoiled, her head jolting back. He hadn’t meant to say it. Fear. Fear ruled his thoughts and crept up unaware. He wanted to win her back and tell her the truth about how Nate reeled her into his trap. How she’d been young and mistaken love for a false safety net. If he told her Nate resorted to torture, how would she react? Thanks to being healed, he didn’t even have any proof.

This might be his last chance to tell her what’s on his heart and he’d be a damned fool to waste it, regardless of what she thought, but he didn’t have time. Balashi might rip him away at any moment, and he refused to leave her this way. He had to convince her to destroy the portals.

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.’

‘You’ll not die for my sake.’

If nothing else, she wouldn’t want his blood on her conscience. She was doing it again. Taking the blame not only for everyone else’s actions but hers as well.

He held back from brushing his hand through her hair. ‘It’s not your fault. Whatever the outcome, I won’t betray you and I’ll not betray myself.’

She trembled against him, and he tightened his hold, powerless to do anything other than offer her a brief moment of reassurance they both knew wouldn’t last.

‘Mirah, listen to me, you’re in danger more than you know. I realise how much Galia and Ammo mean to you, but you have to destroy the portals.
