Chapter Eleven

Ruby kept her distance while the sheriff was there, but the moment he turned to head back to his SUV, she pulled the feast off the grill and raced out to Maggie to check on her and console her with food.

“Snap out of it,” Ruby said. She handed Maggie her plate and sat down with her own. “The sheriff left. You can relax.”

Maggie stirred the slices of ham and pineapple around on her plate. “I don’t feel like I can relax,” she said. “I feel like there is a storm brewing all around me and I can’t see it coming.”

Should she pack her bags and move back to her old life? No, she couldn’t do that because he’d told her to stay in town. She felt stuck where she was and like she wasn’t going to be able to get out no matter which way she turned.

How much danger was she in? Could she actually be accused of a crime?

“I think someone is stirring things around and trying to purposefully make your life difficult,” Ruby said.

“That Toeffler guy, for sure,” Maggie agreed. “But why? I don’t know who he is, and I don’t know why he would be pointing fingers at me.”

“Maybe to keep people from pointing fingers at himself?”

Maggie was quiet for a moment. She speared a piece of ham with her fork and plopped it into her mouth. “I guess the only thing we can do is get busy figuring out what he has to hide,” she said.

“One step ahead of you,” Ruby said. She set her plate aside and ran back inside the house. She emerged a moment later, carrying a laptop along with her. “Let’s see what we can find out about this guy.”

Maggie’s interest in her dinner increased. She finished quickly and held up her glass when Ruby offered to refill her pina colada. “Preparing ourselves for another armchair investigation,” she said and tipped her glass toward Ruby. She didn’t want to make a joke out of it, but something about actually attempting to take part in the investigation that might be able to clear her name was comforting. And maybe even a little fun.

Ruby responded by handing the laptop over. “I think you ought to take the first crack at it,” she said. “I have a feeling you can narrow down anything that has to do with your aunt faster than I can just by asking you questions.”

Maggie accepted the laptop from her and opened the lid. “How did we do this before?”

“We just started with what we already knew and went from there,” she said.

“No, I mean in general. Like, how would we have done this before technology came around?”

“Oh, I have no idea.” Ruby laughed. “All I know is that right now, I’m thankful for social media.”

“Social media, great idea! Let’s start there,” she said. She opened every social media application she could think of and entered “Joel Toeffler” in each of the search features.

“Did you find anything?” Ruby asked a moment later.
