Lorelei and Porter made quick work of the public common rooms. She turned a tight circle in the lobby. “The rain let up. Should we check the grounds?”

“You think she went for a walk in the dark in the middle of the night?”

“On one hand, no. On the other, if she knew it would annoy me, yes.”

“Sounds like she has no more affection for you than you do for her.” He held the door open.

A gust of salt-tinged wind blasted her in the face and penetrated the thin material of her pajamas. Shivering, she dropped Porter’s hand to pull her robe more tightly around her.

He must have taken notice of her clothes, too. “Why don’t you go back in? I can check the property myself.”

“I’d rather freeze out here than face my dad in there. Let’s get this over with.”

“What do you think? Lighthouse or shed?”

“Is it even a contest? Lighthouse. Who would go to a shed?”

Porter wrapped his arm around her shoulders then began rubbing her arm. “Morons? Serial killers? Crazy people?”

“Maybe we should start there.” Chuckling, she leaned into his warmth and headed away from the outbuilding, taking the path toward the cliffs.

“I locked the lighthouse, so she couldn’t get in, but it won’t hurt to ask the Dolans if they’ve seen her. If she tried to get into the lighthouse but couldn’t, she may have stopped at their villa. Especially if the storm had kicked up.”

“You’ve met Bas and Tabitha?”

He nodded. “Our paths crossed a few times at breakfast or dinner, and once when I was leaving the lighthouse, they were opening their door. Nice people. They mostly stay inside.”

She chuckled. “I’m sure.”

“I’m surprised you met them.”

“I bumped into them this evening. Yesterday evening? Not sure what to call it when it’s going on three in the morning.”

“You must be exhausted.”

“I wouldn’t mind a nap.”

“A nap? It’s the middle of the night. You should be in a sound sleep.”

“Stop saying ‘sleep’ or I’ll pass out and you’ll have to carry me back.”

They reached the honeymoon villa. It was dark inside, and no voices or other sounds came from within.

She raised her hand to knock but lowered it again. “I hate to bother them. They check out in the morning.”

“I know. But if your step-mother-to-be—”

“Don’t call her that.”

“Step-monster?”

“Closer, but no.”

“If she was there, or even if they saw her, we really need to know.” Porter knocked.

A light came on. A moment later, a tousle-haired Sebastian opened the door. He rubbed sleep from his eyes and stifled a yawn. “Hey, guys. What’s up?”

“Sorry to bother you,” Porter said. “A guest is missing.”

“Aren’t you the only two guests?”

“Who is it, Bas?” Tabitha called from the bedroom.

“Porter and…” He turned to Lorelei and lowered his voice. “I’m sorry. Your name escapes me.”

“Lorelei.”

“Porter and Lorelei,” Sebastian called.

“You don’t have to yell.” Tabitha entered the room tying the belt of her robe. She joined him at the door and offered a tired smile. “I’m sorry. He forgets his manners when he’s tired. Won’t you come in?”

“Yeah.
