There wasnât much conversation on the way back to Bald Eagle Falls. Vic turned on the radio and closed her eyes and, in a few minutes, was fast asleep. Erin was amazed at how quickly she was out. They were both short on sleep, but it would have taken Erin a lot longer to fall asleep in the car, even in her condition.
Which was probably a good thing, since she was driving.
A couple of minutes after passing the âWelcome to Bald Eagle Fallsâ sign, she was cruising down Main Street toward the Town Hall where the Police Department had their offices. As Terry had said, they didnât really have a jail. A few interview rooms where a cot could be set up and the door locked if they had someone they needed to hold overnight, if transport to the city was no longer an option. Erin found a parking space outside of the brick building and she and Vic headed inside.
Clara at the front desk frowned at Nilla as they walked in, but she didnât say they werenât allowed to have a dog in there and just called Terry on the interoffice phone to let them know they were there.
Terry came out of the office he shared with Stayner, with K9 alertly at heel, as he always was when they were on duty. Nilla yapped excitedly, probably happy to see an old friend after his encounter with the farm dogs. He ran forward to sniff noses with K9, who deigned to lower his head to greet the smaller dog even though he was on duty.
âThanks for coming,â Terry said, giving Erin a smile that made his dimple appear and made Erin glad that she would be at home with him for the night. âI know this is a big pain in the neck.â
âItâs fine,â Erin said, shrugging. âWe were ready for a break from Moose River.â
âFrom the Jacksons, you mean,â Vic inserted. âIâm âbout fed up with my family.â
âThat bad?â Terry sympathized.
âTake how bad you think it could be and double it.â
Terry smiled again and nodded. He led them to one of the interview rooms and opened the door.
