“No!” Hansel cried, outraged at what I had offered the master vampire.

The only one I cared about getting approval from was Karissa but by her conflicted gaze, I knew she wanted me not to do this. I should have told her what my plans were, but I didn’t want her to talk me out of it. But now, I stared at her with regret for not mentioning it earlier. She looked from me to the vampire, struggling to find the words. We both knew what a blood exchange between a vampire and werewolf could mean if I wasn’t careful to control the amount he took.

Jericho was a sneaky and selfish man and even worse, a vampire, and I knew he wouldn’t pass up the offer. But if he thought drinking from me would only benefit him, he was wrong. I needed Karissa to see that there was a good reason for me to offer this.

After a long wait, Jericho realized my hesitation to continue was held by Karissa’s indecision to support my offering. He tried not to let his anger show, speaking swiftly, like a salesman, taking the extra initiative to win her over.

“I will answer anything…within reason, to taste your blood. I will not be sloppy like the young vampires I’ve turned.”

His words only seemed to upset Karissa more. I stepped closer to Karissa, forcing her to only focus on me and not the vampire waiting behind me.

“This is for us,” I whispered.

Karissa’s face burned with fury, searching my gaze for clarity.

“He will try to force his way into your mind until it makes you go mad and submit,” she said softly, making sure I knew the risk.

“I’ve been living that way for several years and I haven’t been beat yet. You taught me that.” I pleaded with her to see.

“Do not do this. Even your mate agrees with me,” Hansel argued.

“Shut up,” Karissa snapped. She exhaled slowly. “I’m trusting you.”

“I should have…” I went silent at her painful stare and knew now was not the right time. “I’ll be okay.”

When I turned back to Jericho, he was grinning. We stared at each other for a few breaths. Jericho had always been interested in doing a blood exchange with me, offering a better place under his guidance. I always refused, knowing it was better to stay with the devil you knew.

Now that I was no longer under Hansel’s thumb, Jericho didn’t concern himself with the formalities, jumping at the chance for a blood exchange.

He was counting on me being weak for being under Hansel’s control for so long. Jericho knew my wolf to be small and therefore weak in his eyes, but he didn’t know the strength I possessed inside.

“I am her master and maker. She is still considered an adolescent for a werewolf, similar to any of your vampires who are newly turned for less than two decades,” Hansel continued to argue.

Rafael chuckled. “And yet your child has run astray. Young vampires would never do such a thing. But it also takes a good leader to maintain guidance.
