CHAPTER 17
I didnât get much sleep that night. The next morning, I lay in bed wondering what I should do. I knew I should inform Beau about the connection to the bank robbery and the missing map. Iâd love to ask him if a certain bluebonnet paperweight had been logged into evidence. The right thing to do would be to tell him about the link, no matter how tenuous, between Marcus Best and the murder victim, but I couldnât. Because anything I told Beau would implicate my uncle as well.
Whatever liberties Beau might afford me did not extend to my immediate family. He wouldnât go easy on my uncle any more than heâd cut my mom a break on a speeding ticket.
When my phone buzzed with an incoming call, I glanced at the screen and was unsurprised to see it was Beau. Not only did we seem to have some kind of annoying psychic connection where he always popped up the minute I started thinking about him, but he was pretty much the only person in the world who called me instead of texting. Well, him and my mom.
I picked up. âHello?â
âMorning, Junebug. Hope I didnât wake you.â
I sat up in bed. âNah, Iâm up.â
âSince we missed our date last Saturday, can I take you out to lunch today?â
I blinked at my clock. He called me before nine a.m. for that? âIâve got errands to run this morning, and Iâm working the afternoon shift at the shop.â I deliberately didnât mention that Maggie and I were long overdue for a serious conversation with our momâs new boyfriend. If we managed to dig up any dirt on him that didnât also lead back to my uncle, Iâd be happy to share it with Beau, but not a second before that.
âAnd you close at, what, seven?â he asked.
âYup.â
âOkay then, Iâll pick you up at seven.â
âHuh? What?â
âFor our date,â he said. âSee ya at seven.â He disconnected. I didnât even remember agreeing to go out on a date with him tonight. Beau was either annoyingly smooth or smoothly annoyingâI just didnât know which.
I got ready for the day and considered making breakfast, but since I planned on hitting the bakery on the way to work, I would pick up something there instead. I took my time picking out my outfitâbut not because I had a date with Beau tonight. No, siree. I selected my white and yellow R.E.M. Out of Time concert shirt. It was one of my favorites simply for the fact that it was the softest, and it didnât hurt that now Iâd be humming âShiny Happy Peopleâ to myself all morning. I dug through my collection of glasses to find my rainbow ones since they were the only pair I owned with yellow on them.
There was a line at the bakery, which was probably a good thing since if Iâd been the only customer, Iâd be tempted to buy one (or two) of everything. By the time it was my turn at the counter, I was ready to eat the entire display case.
