WHEN I GOT HOME, I contemplated an excited Mick. “Do you want to visit Jay?” I asked him.

Mick knew what this meant. He had his own bed at Jay’s apartment, and he often got indulgent treats there. He ran to get his favorite rope toy, tore down my long hallway and stood by the front door, tail wagging.

I laughed. “Not yet. He’s being a detective today, but he said he would be okay with a brief break for lunch.”

I pulled a casserole out of my freezer—a delicious ham, cheese and pasta concoction of my own design—and put it into a tote bag, along with a bottle of wine. I went to my little bathroom to check my appearance. I had dressed up a bit for my lunch with Tammy: a pink tank top, a pink and white flowered skirt, and a white bolero jacket. I had donned a necklace that Jay had given me. It was a large silver key with an embedded heart, dangling from a delicate silver chain. I had his heart, he told me.

Pleased with my ensemble, I grabbed my bag, put on Mick’s leash, and bundled them all into my Volvo. Jay’s apartment was on the other side of Pine Haven, and I enjoyed the drive now that he and I were in a happy place. I had been so nervous, at one point. Every time I heard the name Jay Parker; he had caused extreme agitation within me, but it had been worth the suffering, ultimately. Jay was perfect, as I had known long before we got together.

I smiled smugly, and the smile lingered all the way to Jay’s apartment, where I pulled into the parking lot and pulled into my favorite spot. Mick and I emerged from the car and made our way to the lobby of Jay’s sedate gray building, then rode the elevator to the third floor. Mick had discovered that he loved the elevator, and he would spend the ascent with his paws splayed out, making him look like a puppy ready to play.

I grinned at him as the elevatprt opened and the two of us went to Jay’s door.

I knocked and Jay came to the door, his dark hair slightly mussed, his reading glasses on his nose. “Oooh,” I said. “You were wearing those on the day I met you, remember? When you accused me of robbing your mother?”

He grinned and pulled me into an embrace while Mick trotted into the apartment to make sure everything smelled the way he had left it.

“I thought you were a very attractive thief, though.”

He kissed the top of my head; I lifted my face to his and he bent to kiss my mouth.

Eventually I looked over his shoulder and saw his kitchen. “Oh, wow,” I said.

He had bought one of those giant pads that people use in presentations, the kind made up of big white sticky notes. He had written on about ten pages and stuck them on different cabinets in his kitchen. “You’ve got a whole incident room here.
