Chapter 18

“Are you sure my baby will be able to breathe in here?”

“Positive. It has nine ventilation holes in it.”

The young woman still looked skeptical, so I tried another tactic. “Can I ask when you plan to use the backpack?”

Her round face lit up. “My cat, Tinkles, looks so lonely lately, so I want to take him on walks in the mornings and hikes on the weekend. I think he’ll really like seeing new things. I really want him to get some fresh air.”

I smiled. That was adorable. “This model is perfect for Tinkles, then. With the entire front of the backpack being clear, Tinkles will be able to see everything, whether he’s sitting or laying down. Let’s take it out of the box.”

It was so nice to help a customer without spending the whole time thinking Oh for blood’s sake, just buy it already so I can sit back down! I found myself enjoying the customer interactions much more now that I had my wheelchair.

“Okay,” I said, once I had the bag out of the box and the plastic covering it. “See these three holes on the front? They’re pretty big.” I turned the bag. “There’s also three more near the top on each side.”

“Oh, wow!” she said. “Those are bigger than I expected. It definitely looks like enough airflow. And I love the front. He’ll be able to see all the beautiful trees. Oh! And I can take him to the falls.”

I wasn’t as convinced as she was that Tinkles would appreciate all that nature had to offer while out on walks or hikes with the young woman, but he would probably enjoy just being close to her. “Great! Now, we have four different colors. Would you like black, teal, orange, or pink?”

“I’m a pink girl. By the way, I absolutely LOVE your wheelchair.”

I beamed back at her.

After checking her out and noting that I’d have to come up with a way to better access the high counter and cash register from my chair, I took advantage of a break in customers to open my case notes.

I added one note at the bottom—I’d heard back from my last PI contact that morning, and neither he nor any of the others had a clue how pufferfish not-venom was acquired—before I scrolled through the rest of my notes to review.

The only suspect I’d been able to clear so far was Andrew. The murder could still very well have been about the security-cam footage Oliver had on the USB, but I had to pursue other avenues. Like what was in the mysterious password-protected file on the USB?

I’d never be able to guess it. I thought about hiring someone to break the password, but my only contact in town was on vacation. I didn’t feel comfortable driving a stolen USB drive outside of Arteria Falls to another contact.

My only option was to physically find the password. Most people keep a record of their passwords somewhere. You’d be surprised how many keep it on a sticky note right on their monitor or inside the top drawer of their desk.
