Rafe parked behind my Scion and I commanded him to stay, no matter how cold it was getting. He looked put out but resigned, his jacket tight about him. Getting to the door, I noticed that the sign had been turned around. Not that Charles needed to warn me but, slave-type that he was, he’d never neglect a “rule” no matter how redundant and unnecessary. If an uninvited guest was waiting for me, the sign got turned around. As I quietly stepped into the fragrance of woodsmoke, I heard my sister’s voice from the living room.

“Most of the time it’s pretty quiet. A lot of paperwork. But when there’s a fire or flooding, it’s like those moments in a war room. I turn into a general sending out orders, getting the ball rolling.”

She was talking about her job. I’m still not sure how it had happened, but Loretta had ended up working for an emergency management agency.

“Do you like that?” Charles asked. “Getting the ball rolling?”

“Oh, yes. And I’m really good at it, just like Momma. A blizzard hits, half the city loses power, snow caves in roofs, or traps people, and I just turn on. I seem to know exactly what’s needed and in what order. Shelter, supplies, heat. Bam, bam, bam! I make the calls and things start happening.”

I stepped in to find Charles on the couch and Lo in the plush armchair, the one that offered a good view of the fire. There was a pot of coffee and a plate of the holiday cookies between them. Charles was grinning, and his eyes danced as he caught sight of me. “You’re a lot like your brother,” he said. “He’s the same when putting on a play. Seems to know exactly what’s needed and how it should all go... and woe to anyone who doesn’t listen.”

Cheeky, I thought, and imagined how a good paddling of his ass ought to go. I could make that play happen. Maybe tonight.

Loretta, legs looking extra long in skinny jeans, leg warmers and above-the-knee boots, glanced up from the book she was flipping through (my stellar astrophysics text). She still looked drawn and stressed, but her eyes were no longer red.

“Hey,” she breathed, as I leaned over the chair to kiss her.

“Hey back. See you found your way.”

“Easily. This is a great place, by the way, and so close to the restaurants and shops. Why aren’t you living here again?”

“Because it’s furnished,” I joked. My apartment, which Loretta had visited a few times, was essentially bare but for a bed and a chair.

“Hm. That does make it harder to pile up your books on the floor, though I see you’ve been trying.” She waved to one of my stacks in the corner. “Oh, and sorry about yesterday. I was in a bad place.”

“You still are from the look of it.”

She let out a sigh. “I suppose you’re wondering what happened?”

“I know what happened. Rafe proposed and you said ‘I can’t.’” I steeled my resolve.
