After checking that Gabby was still sleeping and thankfully felt much cooler, Walker stepped into the dim family room. The television, running the preshow before the fireworks display, was the only light flickering in the room.

Lonely, he crossed the room to settle in for the big event. So, his big brother was going to be a father again. A smile lifted the corners of his lips. The pride in Ethan’s eyes as he’d touched Laney’s stomach and announced their pregnancy had been heartwarming. Every man should be so blessed, yet that scene had left Walker wanting a life like his brother’s. A wife and children with that special someone.

He shook the crazy thought from his head and sat on the couch, pulling the lever to raise his feet. He was so blessed with three sweet children to care for, he shouldn’t be looking for more.

Yet he missed Trisha. How had she become such a large part of his life in such a short amount of time? He hadn’t had the nerve to take her hand in broad daylight with the kids and his family nearby. But, oh, how he had wanted to.

Music rose from the television. Shots of the crowds waiting for the light show attempted to lure him into the program. Instead, the emptiness of the family room played on his nerves.

He wanted to be with Trisha. Craved spending the special evening with her and the kids. At the memory of their last Friday movie night, he grinned. By creating that tradition, it had forced Walker to slow down and come in from the barn before nightfall. It didn’t hurt that the kids always congregated on the carpet, leaving Walker and Trisha no choice but to share the couch.

Trisha made him wildly happy. There, he’d said it. He wasn’t sure exactly what made them work so well. On the one hand, he was analytical and she was more adventurous. They shared a faith, worked well as a team, and both loved and were committed to the children. Except his stomach quaked in fear of loving again and possibly losing.

Gravel crunched in the drive. He straightened, then peeked out the window into the dusky night. His heart quickened at the sight of his truck, with Trisha and the kids getting out.

Trisha burst into the house, Tommy and Sophie at her heels, his mother following behind. “We’re here to break you out. Your mom is going to stay with Gabby and we can go back to the football field with your family.”

Trisha had thought of him. Kind of like he’d been ruminating about her.

“No,” he answered. “We’ll never find a parking spot in town this late, but I know a place where we can park and watch.”

After he thanked his mother and informed her Gabby’s fever was much lower, they headed out the front door.

Walker opened the passenger door for Trisha, slid in behind the wheel and checked to make sure the kids’ seat belts were buckled. Why had he opened her door? He mentally smacked his palm against his forehead.
