Chapter Nine
Walter Lombardi
âHeâll probably let you deliver stuff to the Boss next time,â Carlo said as he drove to Walterâs apartment. He kept glancing at Walter like the man was a rabid dog about to fuck him. âYouâre very important to the Family. Tougher and smarter than a lot of the guys in it, really. Things are gonna work out.â
Walter twitched. The street lights running over the car wasnât proving to be a good enough distraction from his rage. Carloâs endearing innocence wasnât helping either.
Before Carlo could try to reassure him again, Walter turned on the radio. The announcerâs static-marred voice, however, grated on Walterâs ears.
How could Carlo be so content with how Louis spoke about him? How he spoke to him? It had been all Walter could do not to punch that drunk bastard in his big fucking nose. Even now, he regretted not making that fucker bleed.
He tried to calm down, he really did, but when Carlo parked in front of his apartment building, Walterâs blood still boiled.
âTell me what to do,â Carlo said, basically begging. He grabbed Walterâs shoulder. âIâll do whatever I can to make this right, but I donât know what I didâ
Walter was torn between strangling the kid and kissing him senseless. âWhy arenât you pissed off? What Louis said. If he spoke to me like that, Iââ Actually, he probably would have held his tongue in hopes of going around Louis and getting some kind of comeuppance. He growled. âYou deserve better than that shit.â
Carloâs eyes widened, a hint of amusement making them sparkle beneath the street lamp. âWalter, thanks for being angry on my behalf and everything, but Louis was just telling the truth. I am a bastard child, and a child of a whore, and I keep to the shadows rather than gain attention.â He snorted then. âWell, not enough for my family, but whatever. Point is, Iâm happy being who I am and having what I have. Louis saying it donât bug me.â
Again, endearing. Walter, despite the frustration and disbelief swelling within him, couldnât help but be warmed by such sincere statements. It was unreal. It was painful to try and comprehend, yet it made something within him soften.
He leaned over and kissed Carlo. The gentle caress of their lips further soothed Walter, his muscles losing their tension. Mindless and needy, he deepened the kiss, and Carlo was quick to part his lips. The taste, the wine, Carloâs wicked and quick tongue made Walterâs head swoon.
Distant headlights had Walter reeling his head back and paling.
The other car was two blocks away, and it turned down an adjacent street a few seconds later.
He sighed, nearly sagging against the back of his own seat.
The kid, keeping his forearm and hand beneath the dashboard, ran a few fingers down Walterâs hip. âYou okay?â
Walter turned to him.
There was no fear in Carloâs face, only concern. His brow furrowed, lips pouting a little, and the patience in his gentle posture. How could anyone be so selfless? Walter thought.
