Chapter Eight

She couldn’t eat, but that didn’t keep her from throwing up, and that made her remember being pregnant. She hadn’t thought she’d ever be that frightened again. She’d been wrong, terribly so.

All these years she’d feared that Wyatt would hate her once he knew the truth, and last night had confirmed that for her. He’d been so angry, coldly furious, over the divorce––or rather the lack of it––that he’d simply sent her away.

She hadn’t been fooled by his lack of reaction. She’d understood that if he’d allowed himself to lash out, he might well have lost control. She’d sensed how tightly he had leashed his emotions, and part of her had grieved because she had been the cause of it.

She had made him shut down. Her wildly passionate Wyatt had simply closed himself off, and she couldn’t help wondering how long it had been that way.

Her fault. All her fault. And now he knew it. Once upon a time she’d been able to pretend that he was as much to blame as she was, but she couldn’t do that anymore, and the truth made her sick to her stomach.

She thought about staying home from work; she was certainly ill enough to justify taking a sick day. It was the last day of the competition, though, the culmination of all her hard work and the most important night of the whole week.

Saturday’s attendance would easily double any other day’s. All the other performances had taken place in the evening, but Saturday would provide a full day of music. Every band in the competition would be performing, even those that already had been eliminated, and tonight the final five in every category would perform, followed by one big concert with the leading band in each group, the award presentation, an encore show and, at the very end, a fireworks display.

Her brainchild, HOBBY RUN, would perform the encore, provided Wyatt elected to go through with it. She couldn’t blame him if he didn’t, but if he didn’t the show would need adjusting, which was just one of many reasons the producer needed to be there.

It didn’t matter that she hadn’t slept, that the single cup of coffee she’d gotten down had come right back up, that she looked like death warmed over and served cold. She put on her jeans and her rings and a pair of flashy cowboy boots, and she went to work.

One of the rings she put on was a simple gold wedding band. For some reason it comforted her. The diamond solitaire that had accompanied it, she left in the box.

The place was in chaos when she arrived. One of her assistants waited in the parking lot when she pulled in, a clipboard in one hand and a radio in the other. Maggs welcomed the onslaught and got to it. She did not seek out Wyatt, and he didn’t come looking for her. She hadn’t expected that he would, but apparently some idiotic part of her had hoped.

Pushing aside the disappointment, she concentrated on getting through the next problem, issue, minute.
