Chapter 46: Mark

8 years ago (Age 17)

My lips still burned from the memory of Adler’s mouth on mine. I pressed my fingers to them, willing the tingling feeling to go away. He’d rejected me. Worse, he’d shown me that he felt the same towards me and then ripped himself away, giving me whiplash. I ground my teeth, anger at the dismissal fuming through my body. My fists balled at my sides as I walked through Yrilkia, slowly making my way back home. Idiot. I shouldn’t have bridged the gap between us, asking the question that had been on my mind for years—did he love me the way I loved him? Would he be mine? Could we make it work? I was a fool. He probably thought all the men I slept with were because I was a fuckboy. But really, I only pined for one person.

When I finally arrived at home, relief washed through me- only mother was home. Her magical signature was warm, while Father’s was unemotional and cold. I couldn’t face my father. Not yet. He would see that Adler had broken me and tell me I told you so. Then he would drag me to the ring where he taught his soldiers and force me to fight it out of my system. The house creaked under my heavy feet as my mother greeted me.

I collapsed onto my bed with a sigh, staring up at the posters on my roof. Unlike my friends, who had photos of nude women on their walls, I had images of motorbikes covering every inch of my room. I turned my head, studying my dresser. A brick model of my dream motorbike was on display on the top. It had a supercharged engine with a total of nearly three hundred and eighty HP and weighed under 500 pounds. It was a sleek silver color with purple trim. The wheels were fancy, too, a lightweight carbon fiber with an irregular bolt pattern and spiraling spokes.

“Mark?” Mother’s voice came from the other side of my door.

“Go away,” I barked, not wanting to be around anyone. The doorknob twisted anyway.

“Mark... What happened?” Her voice was soft, but I refused to look at her gentle face, which was always kind and caring as she sat at the foot of my bed. My body stiffened as she gave my leg a squeeze.

“Adler and I had a fight. It’s nothing.” I waved it off.

“It doesn’t look like nothing.” Fuck. Why couldn’t she just leave me alone? I sighed.

“He doesn’t want me.” I didn’t specify that I wanted to be more than his friend, but I knew she would catch onto what I meant.“Oh, I highly doubt that. Just give him time.” A delicate smile graced her face.

“Like I said, it’s nothing,” I replied. This time she nodded and got up to leave.

“If you ever need to talk to me, son, I am here for you,” she murmured before pulling the door shut behind her.
