11 A Moveable Feast

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

“Okay, so I suppose you’re about to tell us to bow out and leave Ralph and Jody Emerson to fend for themselves,” I said. I asked the question before Jordan could give us “the talk” about amateur sleuths getting in over their heads. What he said instead was an eye-opener.

“I wish I could, but we need your help,” Jordan said.

“Can’t the county sheriff’s department do that?” Hank asked.

“In an official capacity, you and your department can be a huge help. Charly told me, however, that Miriam and their friends have an inside track on more informal connections to some of the people involved. That includes whatever Ralph Emerson’s entanglements might mean. I understand the Altamonte girl called Miriam and confided in her. That could be important.”

“Why? I asked. “Is Alice in danger because she struck up a friendship with Lowell?”

“I hope not. Hank has put officers in place to watch out for her. We’ll help do that too. Please don’t share this information, but the shipping firm we’re concerned about is up for sale. Alice’s father’s company is negotiating to purchase it.”

“Does that mean you expect me to pump her for information about her father’s business deals?” I was growing more distressed about Alice. “She’s a child, not a pawn in a chess game.”

“It’s not like that, Miriam. I brought up Alice when I spoke with Jordan because Lowell gave items to her, like that note for me.” Charly paused and glanced from me to Jordan and then to Hank.

“And, no, I still don’t get what Lowell’s note means or why he left it for me. It reads like an excerpt from a script for an episode of Seinfeld. You know that show that got so much acclaim because the episodes were about nothing?” Then Charly spoke to me again.

“I also told Jordan about your concern for the child. I trust your intuition. Jordan agrees we need to stick close to her until we get this case resolved. When you see her tomorrow, you’ll have another opportunity to tell her you’re here for her and encourage her to contact you if she feels scared or uncomfortable.”

“She’s a remarkably clever child. Sensitive too,” I replied, almost speaking to myself. “Alice may well be aware of more of what’s going on around her than she can express. I’ll do what I can to get her to come to me with questions rather than go to someone else. She does have her nanny to watch out for her. It worried me that she was so open with Joe and Carl just because they were in a golf cart from our community.” Charly nodded.

“Alice may be too curious and open for her own good. Sandra seems nice enough, but they don’t seem to have bonded the way Alice did with you.
