Things seem to have worked out well, hm?

Eden screamed.

ADAIR HAD SETTLED IN FOR the night an hour before. His desire to wash the day off had been overwhelming when he’d crossed the threshold, and he’d ended up settling on the couch in a pair of well-loved sweatpants, a movie that he’d never admit to having seen, and a beer. The knock on the door had almost startled him and seeing that Eden was on the other side of the door wasn’t doing anything to calm his heart rate.

“I don’t want or need to be alone, and you’re the first person that I thought of,” she said softly, her arms hugging herself as she avoided his gaze and spoke as softly as she could possibly manage. Adair had chosen to smile, and motion for her to come in instead of picking with her embarrassment. Even he knew that now wasn’t the time.

“Here,” he said, handing her the other half of the beer he’d been nursing. “You look like you need a drink, and that’s the last one in the house.”

Eden smiled and took the bottle gently from his hands. “I appreciate it but are you sure that you want me to have your last beer?” she asked.

“You, my darling, can have my last anything,” he said, a dramatic bow tacked onto the end of the statement because he knew that it would make her laugh.

“Dork,” she said, chuckling. He had no problem being a dork if it meant that she was smiling.

“Have you eaten?” he asked, on his way to his bedroom to grab a shirt and a pair of shoes. He’d been serious about that being the last beer.

“No, not yet,” she called out in response.

“There’s a little pizza place around the corner that makes great pies. I can go get more beer and stop for a pizza on the way back.”

Eden smirked and took a healthy gulp of the shared beer. “You know me so well,” she grinned.

Once Adair was sure that Eden was settled in, he took off towards the store, locking her inside, just in case. She hadn’t judged him about the sappy movie that he’d been watching when she’d come inside but she had asked if she could change it, which had made Adair laugh before handing her the TV remote.

The night was cooler than normal due to the storm that had rolled through the city a few hours prior, and Adair hunched down into the hoodie that he’d pulled on before stepping out of his apartment. He lightly jogged from the apartment to the convenience store but chose a stroll from there to the pizza place and back to avoid shaking everything up.

The movie was still going when Adair stepped back inside, which wasn’t surprising, but the light snore that came from the couch was. He gently set everything down and peeked over the back of the couch to find Eden, wrapped up in the blanket that he kept on the couch for chilly evenings, and sound asleep.
