Fifteen

Drue didn’t know why Merrick was staring at her like a deer caught in the headlights, but it made her even more nervous than when he’d asked about where she’d grown up. Did he think she meant the original McAllisters? Of course, that was the truth, but she was trying to imply that her family had known their descendants. Maybe she should clarify…

“You know, before they sold the place and moved out of town. My parents were teenagers at the time.” There, let him put two and two together. She didn’t want to lie any more than she had to.

“Right,” he said with a slow nod. “Back in the sixties, you mean.”

“Right,” she agreed with a smile. “I don’t know, I guess I just feel connected to the house because of that.” Also true. Not for the reason she stated, but still true.

“That’s nice,” he said with a smile that seemed a bit forced.

Thankfully, the waitress chose that moment to bring their food which halted Merrick’s line of questioning. She’d ordered a mushroom and Swiss burger with sweet potato fries, while he ordered a bacon burger with avocado and steak fries.

“Mmm, that looks good,” she said as she inspected the juicy-looking burger the waitress placed in front of him.

He chuckled and scooted the plate closer to her. “Want to trade?”

She shook her head. “Oh, no, I was just saying.” She shyly dipped her chin and picked up her own burger. Gooey cheese oozed over the sides while mushrooms and onions lay smashed under the bun.

“This smells divine,” she said after a deep inhale. “Mmm, I can’t wait to dig in.” When she glanced at Merrick, he was already chewing on a fry.

She might have offered to pray before they ate but didn’t want to broach the topic if it wasn’t something he’d already planned on doing. But since he’d put her on the spot with his question earlier, she decided to do the same to him.

“So, what about you, Merrick? You said you grew up here in Luna Harbor. Do you have siblings?”

He took a drink of his Coke and swallowed before answering. “I did have one sibling. But she was stillborn, so I never knew her.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” she said with all sincerity.

“It’s fine, really. Like I said, I never knew her, and I was only two when my mother gave birth to her. It was hard for my parents for a few years afterward, though. And my mom never wanted to try for any more children after that.” He barely looked up from his burger.

“What was her name?”

Merrick looked up and swallowed the bite he’d been chewing. “My sister’s?”

“Your mother’s.”

He picked up a fry then tossed it down again, not meeting Drue’s gaze. “Her name was Patricia.”

“That’s a beautiful name.”

He nodded, gaze still locked on his plate. “She was a beautiful person. Inside and out. Special.” He lifted his eyes to meet hers. “You remind me of her a little.”

Drue’s heart swelled.

“Really?” she asked, genuinely curious to know if he meant it or if he was just trying to flatter her.
