I followed the tow truck from the scene to the Aurora Police impound parking lot. Once it passed through the gates, I parked a half-block away. I knew where all the cameras were located and avoided them easily, then waited until the tow truck left before slipping in as the gates closed—walking casually so as not to attract attention.

It didn’t take long to find the car since I watched which row the tow truck turned into. The doors, trunk, and hood were sealed with green police evidence tape, but I peeled it back gingerly, not wanting to break the officer-initialed seal. I wore gloves, of course, this being illegal, as I quickly went through the car, hoping no one would find me. I knew Jared would have investigators here as soon as the judge signed off on the search warrant.

There was a red marker in the glovebox and a bent, crumpled map wedged between the front driver’s seat and the center console. The map was marked with red circles and lines that traced a wandering path through several states. A chill rippled through me as I recognized a few of the circled locations—dumpsites where other kidnap victims’ bodies had been recovered. The red line indicated a final destination—Canyon City, the Royal Gorge.

I snapped pictures with my phone and put everything back in place.
