CHAPTER 9
"Oh my gosh." Dina stood up behind the reception desk as Quill entered the foyer. "What happened?"
Quill wasn't aware that she'd walked all the way down three flights of stairs. She blinked at Dina. "What are you doing here?"
"I work here."
Quill made a noise.
"Whoa," Dina said.
" 'Whoa' what?"
"You snarled. You never snarl."
Quill made the noise again.
Dina sat down again, rather tentatively. "You're not going to throw anything, are you?"
"What!?"
"Nothing," Dina said hastily, "I didn't say a word. These lips are sealed. Forget I'm even here." She moved the stapler out of sight and put the telephone on the floor beside her chair. Quill looked at the reception desk, which was now clear of throwable objects. Too bad. "Did you need to see me?"
"Actually," Dina said. "You came to see me. Or at least, you came down the stairs. And I'm at the end of them."
Quill looked back at the stairs. So she had. "Things are out of control. Have you noticed that things are out of control?"
"Nope. All I've noticed are a couple of phone calls that you should probably return. I can put them in your office if you'd like. And maybe get you a cup of tea." Her voice rose. "Where are you going?"
Quill had just decided what to do. She'd been so mad that she hadn't been able to decide what to do, but now things were crystal clear. "The kitchen."
Dina edged out onto the oriental rug that covered the main part of the foyer and grabbed Quill's arm. 'Take a couple of deep breaths. Think cheerful thoughts."
Quill breathed. Then she looked at the rug. She liked the rug, although it wasn't really a practical choice for an entrance area. The background was cream, overwoven with flowers in celadon, pink, sage, and peach. She stared at it for a long moment.
"I think you should, like, maybe sit in the office for a sec," Dina said. "Just 'til you calm down a bit more."
"I am perfectly calm. I'll be even calmer after I get to the kitchen."
"Why?"
"I am going to the kitchen to get the ten-inch boning knife. And I am going out to the parking lot and puncture all the tires on Jerry Grimsby's truck. And then I am going back upstairs and puncture Jerry Grimsby."
"Whoa," Dina said.
"You are repeating yourself," Quill said icily.
"You might want to think about whether or not you want to puncture Jerry. Who's going to run the kitchen while Meg gets married?" Dina leaped a little at the expression on Quill's face. "Well. Okay then. You won't have to go back upstairs to puncture Jerry Grimsby if you're that determined to do it. He's in the kitchen."
"He is not. He is ..." Quill clamped her mouth shut. Upstairs with my crazy sister! "Not in the kitchen."
"He was like, in the kitchen thirty seconds ago. He's been there all morning."
"How do you know that?" Quill demanded.
Dina shrugged. "He just called me on the intercom and asked if I wanted some cinnamon focaccia. I said sure.
