Chapter 12
The moment Vic ran upstairs to tell David of their plans for the next day, Xavier located Gregory. âThis is quite embarrassing, but I need to use your phone.â
âMy phone?â
âYes, there are no others in this house.â
Gregory smiled and led him to the phone.
Xavier stared at the massive suite and the museum quality paintings on the wall. âYour room is most impressive,â Xavier stated.
âI take immense pleasure in improving it.â
âIâll say. These paintings are exquisite.â
âThey are indeed. And you are pondering how I can afford them.â
âIf you wouldnât mind telling me.â
âIt has all come from my telephone stock.â
âAh, yes. That makes perfect sense, or it would if you had sold all your telephone stock.â
âI did and bought these beautiful paintings instead.â
âMay I ask why?â
âWell, I believe, sir, that I now can claim to have the finest butlerâs room in London.â
âDoes that include the Queenâs butler?â
âHeâs not allowed to put anything on his walls. The Queen believes servants, even the butler, should never step out beyond their station.â
Xavier laughed softly and gripped Gregoryâs arm. âI am so glad you decided to live with us, Gregory.â
âAs am I sir, as am I.â Gregory replied, growing nearly an inch taller with pride.
Xavier frowned at the phone but had yet to pick it up.
âShall I call the number for you, sir?â
âYes, if you wouldnât mind,â Xavier said.
A moment later, he handed the telephone to Xavier. âWhen you are done with the call, simply place the handle back on the catch and the call will disconnect.â
âThank you, Gregory. You may stay and hear my side of the conversation. This is about Claire.â
Gregory nodded once and stayed.
âFrederick, this is Xavier Thorn. I may have an interesting case for you. However, I must forewarn you that this case hits close to home. Itâs Victorâs sister. She appears to be going mad. Victor believes you might be a mesmerist, but of the good kind, and perhaps you could take Claire back to when she was happy and remove whatever is slowly driving her insane.â
Xavier expected a negative response. However, to his shock, Frederick agreed to try and requested he bring Victor and whoever else was close to the lady.
âIâll bring the husband, Vic, and myself. We should be there around eight or nine in the morning.â
âAnd the lady?â Frederick asked.
âWe thought it best if we came first without her.â
âWhy?â
âFirst, Vicâs sister is beautiful and smart, and I know how you fall for those. Secondly, her husband needs to believe you can help her before he will place her in your care.â
âSounds like a caring husband.â
âHe is, personally, I cannot stand Claire, but both Vic and David adore her. So, if it is possible to fix her, we need to do so.â
âActually, Iâm rather intrigued by Vicâs suggestion.â
âSo, you are a mesmerist?â
âI know exactly what a mesmerist does, so technically I guess I could be a mesmerist, but I wonât be able to say for certain that this will work until I meet the client. Is she coming willingly or by force?â
Xavier sighed heavily.
