The man is tall like a tree but he is not showing everything.

His strength is his silence and as he glides toward the dark embankment he takes no heed. The forces that throb and bang and boom do not disturb him, he is keenly in tow.

He stops at the base of the hummock.

He speaks to himself or someone but his voice has no emotion, no inflection. His feelings do not exist, and if they do, they are so far removed that there is no way to claim them back. That part of him is dead. Up the elevation, there is a body, there is blood. Except it’s not a body, it’s still breathing and it’s writhing, the shrieks and groans an undulating scale.

The tall man inches closer, looks at the bloodied form.

The woman with the wide, wet eyes looks back. She is younger, a corpulent, paunchy specimen with hair like threads of a rainbow. Sticks once fixed in her hair are now splintered on the ground. She is breathing heavily. The flames in her eyes are fading. She shakes her head as her lips quiver, and she nods.

The nod is returned. The tall man, so preternaturally thin, plunges the knife into her neck.
