The murderous rage in this woman’s eyes—and it was still difficult to see the massive, hulking creature as a woman even if she clearly had the supersized figure of one—was some of the most intense Gage had ever seen. Her irises were as dark as her pupils except for a fuzzy amber band. The eyes didn’t contain the fiery heat of her anger so much as they blocked it, the way the moon eclipses the radiant heat of the sun.

Then, in a single blink of enormous eyelids decked out with sparkling green eye shadow, the rage was replaced by what was unmistakably lust. She looked Gage up and down in a way that made him far more uncomfortable than her anger had.

“And just who are you, handsome?” she asked, batting her eyelashes at him.

Her husky voice did not match her body. The voice made him think of Marilyn Monroe. The body made him think of Andre the Giant—if Andre had what could only be called an hourglass figure, even if that hourglass was at least six and a half feet tall and contained well over three hundred pounds. None of those pounds, from what he could see, was what he would call fat. Everything was just bigger and fuller. Her arms were as big around as drainage pipes. Her breasts, which she showed off to great effect with a plunging neckline, were like two beach balls.

She was so tall that her head did not even appear in the mirror behind her. “What, cat got your tongue, sugar?” she said. “I asked you a question.”

“Right,” Gage said. “You think you could release him first?”

“What’s that?”

“Our friend here,” Gage said. “He’s looking a tad uncomfortable.”

She turned and looked down at her fingers clenched on Stuart Horn’s crotch, her eyes widening as if she’d forgotten exactly where her hand was. Stuart Horn, judging by the agony on his face, clearly had not.

“Oh this?” she said. “Yeah, see, me and Mr. Horn here are just having a little conversation, that’s all.”

“Seems like a bit more than that,” Gage said.

“You tell me your name, sugar, I’ll let him go.”

“You want my name?”

“That’s right. And why you got that cane. I hope you’re not crippled or nothing. That would be a damn shame.”

Gage was still debating what harm could come from telling this strange woman who he was when Stuart Horn piped up in his pipsqueak voice.

“Garrison Gage!” he said. “His name—his name is Garrison Gage!”

“Aw,” the big woman said, “now you went and ruined it. I wanted him to tell me. You two friends or something?”

“No,” Gage said, “I’ve never even met the man.”

“Not much of a man, judging by what I’m holding,” she said, grinning down at Stuart Horn. Half her teeth were capped in gold. She pulled Stuart closer, using the most sensitive part of his body to do so. “How you know his name anyway?”

“He’s a famous detective!” Stuart said. “Famous around here any—anyway! Please! God, please let go!”

“Oh, is that right?” the woman said, turning to Gage again.
