Chapter Ten

Luella found Garrick deep in conversation with his brothers in the earl’s office. “Pardon me, sirs.” Turning to face Garrick, she said, “May I speak with you in private for a moment, sir?”

Giving a wide smile, Garrick jumped at the opportunity to speak with Lacey’s maid. He had been observing her and had discerned by the way she carried herself that she had not always been a servant. He sensed that Luella was a gently bred woman who must have, somehow, fallen on hard times. She was well spoken and absolutely beautiful. With her looks and mannerisms, anyone could easily mistake her for nobility.

Luella quickly relayed Lacey’s message to Garrick and then turned, swiftly walking away in a rush to escape to the kitchens. She did not want to be in his presence for too long, afraid he would notice the effect his mere proximity had on her. She did not want Garrick to see how nervous she got, how her pulse raced, or how shallow and labored her breathing became.

Garrick smiled to himself, sensing Luella’s attraction to him. Sticking his head out the office door, Dallin asked, “Things good here, little Garrick?”

Garrick swung around to face his brother. “Yes, I have just been summoned by your wife. Please excuse me.”

Dallin’s jaw twitched as he wondered what it was his wife needed that she could not ask of him. He felt the sting of jealousy and decided to head to his uncle’s quarters in order to preserve his sanity.

Garrick was amazed at all Lacey had accomplished in the short amount of time she had been at Neeley Hall.

Lacey was standing at the earl’s bedside when Garrick approached her. “Good evening, Garrick,” Lacey greeted in a quiet, soft tone. “I was hoping to solicit your help this evening.”

“What is it you need, Lacey?”

“Can you please help Dobbs lift the earl in and out of the tub for a bath. I am hoping the cool water will aid in bringing down his fever and healing the sores he has acquired from not being turned properly.”

“Of course I shall help you,” Garrick responded.

Lacey gave his hand a squeeze, trying to convey without words that she would do all within her power to help his uncle. After she smiled her thanks to Garrick, Lacey turned and met the watchful eyes of her husband. She stepped forward to go to him but wavered at the flicker of irritation she saw pass across his face.

Taking a deep breath, it took every ounce of courage Lacey possessed to force her feet to continue moving forward.

Lacey wrapped her arms around her husband’s neck and laid her head on his chest, taking comfort in the steady beat of his heart.

Dallin did not respond to Lacey until she looked up into his eyes and gave him a smile that said she belonged to him and only him. He then wrapped his arms snugly around her waist and pressed a sweet, gentle kiss to her lips.

Staring straight into her beautiful green eyes, he wrapped his arms so tightly around her waist that Lacey strained to breathe.
