CHAPTER 15

Vivienne

I paced the suite waiting for Donna and Joanne. They were my best friends, and I wanted them to like Alessandro. They knew who and what he was, what he did for a living, but they didn’t know the Alessandro I knew.

“Bella, would you relax.”

I smoothed my summery yellow dress for the umpteenth time, looking down at my nude sandals. It was probably too light for the cool London weather, but after the heat of Sicily, I didn’t want to take a step back.

“I’m nervous. I haven’t seen them in a long time.”

He casually sipped at his scotch from his spot on the long gray couch.

“Why don’t you say what you really want to say.”

I caught his gaze and stopped pacing. “What are you talking about?”

“You know what I mean. You don’t want them to judge you because you’re engaged to a gangster. Admit it.”

“Well, there’s that.” I rushed over to the couch and sat next to him. “They don’t know you the way I do. The good parts.”

“Is that why you want me to tell you about my life?” he asked.

“Partly. The rest is because I want to know you better.”

“I’m sure they won’t hold my mafia roots against me. I don’t expect a woman as wonderful as you to have friends like that.”

“They’re lovely,” I promised. My cell rang, and I jumped up to answer it. “Hello, Donna.”

“We’re downstairs,” Donna replied. “What room are you in?”

I swallowed hard. “The penthouse.”

She coughed. “Of course, why not be in the penthouse? We’ll be right up.”

Alessandro rose from where he was sitting and brushed at his slacks before he adjusted his waistband.

“Lose the gun,” I directed. “Donna and Joanne aren’t a threat.”

He sighed but removed the Glock from his waistband and took it to the bedroom. The handle of a gun sticking out of the back of his pants wouldn’t make a good impression. A knock at the door had my stomach churning with anticipation, but when I opened it, Roberto was standing there.

“Come in,” Alessandro said over my shoulder.

I stepped aside to let the big man enter. He was in his usual dark suit, and I was sure somewhere on him was a gun. It was apparent Alessandro was bending to my will by stowing his weapon, but he’d essentially replaced it with the one Roberto carried.

I continued waiting at the door and looked down the hall when I heard talking. Donna and Joanne were stepping from the elevator, and I leaned out, calling to them.

“Curly girlies!” I called.

It was a name we used for our small group. Back in middle school, we all had perms, and Donna coined the phrase. They squealed and hurried down the hall, arriving at the door in seconds. We shared a group hug, and I dragged them into the room.

Donna was the taller of the two, with golden blonde hair and gray eyes. Joanne was barely five feet tall with dark brown hair and almost black eyes. She was a spitfire, and if you crossed her, watch out.
