Michael McDrake was on his way home when his cell phone rang. He had decided to have an early finish, something he never did, and he almost ignored the call, but he knew he would only wonder about it if he did. He put the phone on speaker and hit the answer icon on the screen.

“Michael McDrake,” he said.

“Mr. McDrake, this is Mr. Lowe from Adamsville High School,” Mr. Lowe said. “It’s about Alison.”

“Go on. Is she ok?” Michael asked.

“She was found unconscious outside of the girl’s bathroom. Another girl was found dead inside of the bathroom. It’s only speculation but I believe whatever she saw caused her to black out. When she came around, she was pretty stressed out but the paramedics said she would be fine. She was taken to the general hospital,” Mr. Lowe said.

“A girl was found dead you say?” Michael said. “What on earth happened.”

“I’m not really supposed to say but I trust you will be discreet?” Mr. Lowe said.

“Of course,” Michael replied, impatient now.

“Well, the girl was murdered,” Mr. Lowe said. “And when Alison came around she said she saw someone. I didn’t press her for more information because like I said she was distressed and I figured it was more important to get her sorted medically first and then she can tell the police what she saw.”

“Yes, yes, thank you Mr. Lowe. I’ll go on over to the hospital now,” Michael said.

He ended the call without waiting for a reply or saying goodbye. He pulled over to the side of the road and put his head in his hands. He knew exactly what had happened, and he could bet who the dead kid was. Why, out of every kid in the school did it have to be his kid who wandered out of class at the wrong moment and saw the killer? He couldn’t bear thinking about what might happen to her if she divulged the information that led the police to him. And he couldn’t think of anyway to convince her to keep quiet without having to tell her why.

It was horrible enough that in the next few weeks, he was going to be called upon to kill his eldest child. He wasn’t about to risk losing Alison too. He would lose her if he told her the truth and he would lose her if she talked. What the hell was he supposed to do?

An idea came to him slowly. He didn’t exactly love the idea – the thought of messing with his daughter’s mind horrified him - but he knew it could work and it was better than either of the alternatives. He was going to have to give his daughter a large dose of Triazolam. It was an anti-anxiety drug if taken in normal amounts, but if a large dose was taken, it would wipe a person’s short term memory for good.

He pulled back into the flow of traffic and headed for home. He ran upstairs to his home office and opened up a small safe that was hidden in the floor.
