Chapter 14

I’d almost reached the pub when Naomi popped into the passenger seat. After getting my mini heart attack out of the way, I glanced at her. Her face was pale—and, yes, Naomi was a ghost, but she looked like she did when she was alive, and that was nowhere near as white as she was now. “What happened?”

“Maybe you should pull over.”

“Oh, it’s like that, is it?” What in Hades happened? I pulled onto the shoulder, put my hazard lights on, and turned to Naomi. “Spill.”

“As soon as you left, he called his brother.” She shut her eyes, then opened them again, the pain in them obvious. Nooooo! “The first thing he said to him was, ‘What have you done?’ Then he explained about the police. I don’t know what his brother said, but Kyle responded with ‘Are they coming after me next…, you, Mum, Dad? Who’s next, little brother?’” She took a calming breath and wrung her hands in her lap. “Kyle said if Max didn’t fix it, he would go to the police himself. Consequences be damned. Then he hung up on him.”

I stared out of the windscreen, not seeing anything. What did it all mean? Was he talking about the police coming after them for the murder, or did he mean someone else was involved and was coming after them if Max didn’t appease them? I turned to Naomi. “Well, maybe it would be good if Max went to the police. There’s obviously something else going on.”

“There’s something else.”

I blinked. “Something else?”

“Kyle ran to the bedroom, threw as much as he could fit into one suitcase, including his passport, and tore out of there in his car. I think he’s on the run.”

My eyes widened. “Is he running because he’s scared of being next on the list or of getting caught by the police? Can you pop into his car and see where he goes?”

“I don’t know. I feel like he’s scared for his life. He’s not a panicker, and he’s certainly not someone who makes spur-of-the-moment decisions. He likes to think things through, which is why we made such a great team. I pushed him out of his comfort zone.” Her eyes implored me. “Please get to the bottom of this quickly. I don’t want him to die.”

“But we don’t know he’s going to die. Let’s figure out why he’s running before we jump to that particular conclusion.” I hated seeing her in a panic, especially since he might be running because he didn’t want to go to prison.

She shook her head, tears glazing her eyes. “Okay, but how? If only he could see me. He’d tell me the truth.”

“I wish that were possible, Naomi. It would make life a lot easier.” If there was a way for me to help others see ghosts, now would be the time to work it out, but I was pretty sure there wasn’t.

I considered what she’d told me. Did the new information complicate things or make them easier?
