The sun already peeked over the horizon, displaying vivid oranges and magentas, as I crouched in the woods with Natalie. Maisie had gone ahead to the café, I didn’t think I needed any assistance for the spell to work. She wouldn’t be able to help me anyway, not unless she wanted a nice jolt from the bangles.

“You’re going to bind me to that?” Natalie pointed to an old, faded black scarf.

I clenched my jaw, having gone over ‘the plan’ with her three times. “Correct.”

She sighed, her shoulders slumped. “Couldn’t I be bound to something nicer? It could even be another scarf, like”—her face brightened, and she snapped her fingers—“a burgundy cashmere scarf.”

“Sorry.” I resisted an eye roll. “Burgundy clashes with my skin tone.”

“What’s the point of this anyway?” Natalie tried to poke at the scarf with her foot.

“I’m hoping to trigger your memories, so you can help me figure out who killed you.”

“Okay, but I just want it known that I am not a fan of convenient store clothes.”

“Hopefully you won’t be a convenient store item for long,” I said, keeping the annoyance out of my voice as I rethought my plan. No, I needed her help. I didn’t have much to go on and Wildewood PD had written the crash off.

I closed my eyes, held my hands above the scarf, and whispered, “Objectum damnabis.” My palms heated as magic rushed through me. I held one hand out to Natalie and repeated the spell.

Her image flickered; the bright blue of her Wildewood Realty blazer grayed. I could no longer differentiate between her two legs as they merged into a funnel of muted colors. It trailed away from her body to touch the scarf. I said the spell for the third and final time. The particles of her image disappeared over the scarf in a white light, until it fell like stardust onto the fabric. Once the light faded, I picked it up and hung it over my shoulders. The fabric was warm from the transfer. Convenient store scarf, psssh, it did the job just fine.

Walking out of the woods toward the main road that would lead me to the café, Natalie’s voice ran through my skull like nails on a chalkboard: Oh, God, it’s so scratchy in here.

I paused, looked up to the sky, and sighed. Please, don’t let her do this all day.

I think I might be getting hives.

“Natalie,” I said through my clenched teeth, “you are a ghost. You cannot get hives.”

Oh, right.

I picked up my pace, hoping to get in before the café opened. I thought Agatha had been irritating as an inanimate object, boy, was I wrong. This was going to be fun. So. Much. Fun.

You’re sure I can’t get hives? Because I really think—

“Oh my God, no, you cannot get hives. And if you don’t chill out, I’m going to drop you down a drain.”

You wouldn’t dare! She gasped.

No, I wouldn’t but I would toy with the idea in my happy place, where I’d have to go in order to get through the next few hours with her hanging around.
