Chapter 12: Follow My Leader

Relieved but exhausted that The Duke had enjoyed his sport for the day and she was now free, Anna contented herself with nestling into the luxurious rear seat of the Bentley.

He’s one dangerous creep.

Her journey back to the vicarage was, as with the outward journey, completed in silence, except this time, it was she who had little inclination to make conversation.

As the immense vehicle stopped opposite the church, neither minder made any effort to help her from the car. Instead, they remained motionless, eyes fixed to the front.

Opening one of the massive rear doors, Anna moved through ninety degrees so that she could put both feet on the narrow pathway to support her ankle injury. Suddenly, she caught sight of Eddie rounding the corner. Gesturing as discreetly as she could, Anna was relieved he got the message and doubled back around the gable end of the old tannery.

Seconds later, the Bentley moved forward as if in a grand procession. This was the signal for the lieutenant to reappear. ‘You look as if you’ve seen a ghost. Anything to do with that car?’

Anna took a minute to explain what had happened while he’d been in London.

‘You need a drink. Let’s get you to the King’s Head.’

Anna gave him a sideways glance. ‘You must be joking – I can’t be seen in the village pub on a Monday evening, especially not this early. There’d be half a dozen of my father’s flock lining up outside the vestry, ready to tell him the world was about to end.’

The American shoved his hands deep into his trouser pockets and shrugged his shoulders. ‘I don’t get you people. One minute you’re saving a few pennies to buy a Spitfire, the next you’re quite happy tearing each other apart.’

‘It’s a speciality of ours. Anyway, I’ve got a better idea. Horsey Windpump is only about half an hour away, and there’s a great spot overlooking the Broad.’

Eddie told Anna to wait while he collected the Jeep, and soon they were heading east. As Lipton St Faith receded into the distance, Anna felt increasingly relaxed.

So, what were you up to in London while I was being kidnapped?’

Now it was Eddie’s turn to recount events, though he was careful not to give Anna any detail of his real mission.

‘That’s terribly sad, but brave of you to get involved.’

Eddie shrugged his shoulders again as he crunched the Jeep’s gears to pick up speed. ‘You’d have done the same. You’re walking past something terrible, somebody asks you to help… It’s an easy decision, don’t you agree?’

‘I agree it’s a decision many would take. On the other hand, some people would’ve kept their head down and pretended nothing was happening. You said there was a photograph?’

Eddie kept one hand on the steering wheel while retrieving the grainy image from his breast pocket.

‘They look so happy together. Whoever that young girl is, she’s lost her mother. I know the same thing is happening all over the world, but still, when faced with an image, it makes the tragedy all the more real.
