The following morning Joe and Tessa interviewed the young couple who witnessed the attack when they were returning from a walk along the beach. They were running. They were trying to beat the heavy rain they knew was coming and nearly missed what was happening. The wife thought she saw something, but thought it was probably just a couple making out. ‘It happens a lot around here,’ she told Joe and Tessa. So she kept running. But something didn’t look right to her about the scene. Was the guy being aggressive? The couple ran back about fifty metres and saw a man and woman wrestling on the grass. They heard a stifled cry. The man was punching her, over and over. And then the woman stopped struggling. They called out to him, ‘Stop. We’ve called the police.’ The man jumped up and sped away in a dark-coloured car. It was raining, and the car was going too fast to make out what it was, but they both agreed that it looked upmarket. They didn’t see the man clearly enough to give a description. They ran over to the woman after ringing triple O. Her face was streaked with blood. And she was so still they didn’t know if she was dead or alive. They didn’t move or touch her and waited for the police and ambulance to arrive.

After interviewing the two witnesses, Joe and Tessa returned to the hospital. Tessa scanned the evidence report while Joe circled the hospital car park. On his second time around, Tessa pointed to a park between a Jeep and a Toyota Hilux. ‘Over there.’

‘It’s too narrow.’

‘I could fit a semi in there.’

‘You could and you would. I could, but I wouldn’t.’

Joe eventually parked at the back of the car park at the end of a row, metres away from the nearest car. ‘What does the report say?’

‘There was a lot of rain last night, so not much. They found her shoes and a pair of broken glasses.’

‘Sunglasses or clear lens?’

‘Clear. The arms were bent, but they made out the brand, Cartier. If the evidence gods are on our side, we might get a partial fingerprint from them.’

‘Designer brand. And an expensive-looking car, according to the witnesses. And Yolanda said it looked fancy. Our guy is well off.’

They made their way unnoticed past the busy nurses’ station to Yolanda’s room. Yolanda’s parents, who Joe recognised from the previous night, sat either side of Yolanda. Another lady, who appeared to be in her fifties, sat next to Yolanda’s mother.

Yolanda’s father, a burly man with a woodchopper’s build, stood and loomed towards the door. ‘What are you doing here?’ Red faced, he waved a muscle-bound arm and pointed to the window. ‘Why aren’t you out there catching the son of a bitch who did this to our baby girl?’

His wife hurried over and put an arm around his shoulder. ‘Sit down, Jim. They’re here to talk to Yolanda. They’re doing their job.’

Jim put his arms around his wife and sobbed.
