Chapter 9

Dash

Trusting the kid and his mom will be safe with a former Marine pilot, I wrap an arm around Jack’s waist and help him toward the back. “C’mon mate. You’re next.”

“Move it, you two.” Olivia shouts over an explosion at the front of the house.

“You sure about this, bro’?” I’m having serious misgivings about his cockamamie plan.

“No one attacks my family. These motherfuckers are going down, let’s do this.” With renewed energy, he hobbles down the hall and jumps through the cut-out in the ancient flooring.

While I jump next to him, the healer tosses down a set of keys. “Take my car. It’s parked out back.”

“Aren’t you coming?” Feet planted on the sand below the building, I peer up through the bolt hole.

“No way, I’m perfectly fine. Just go.” Lit by the red neon glow coming through the open window, she flashes an almost demonic smile, and kicks the trapdoor shut.

Eyes toward the pine trees, my client points at the sky. “The damn helicopter has a spotlight.”

Bloody hell. Reloading my Glock, I crouch, but uncoil when a burst of light shoots from Zoe’s hands.

Holy mother of God, she must’ve donned a sleeve weapon, maybe two. For a moment, the bird she fired upon goes sideways, and I brace for the inevitable crash. However, at the last moment, the pilot rights the aircraft and zooms away.

His family out of immediate danger, the CEO climbs out from under the building. “Time to abduct me and sell me to the highest bidder.”

“That, my friend, I know how to do.” As we make our way to the parking lot, the wind dies down, and a strange and sudden fog descends from the sky. “Are we just going to leave Olivia to fend for herself?”

“Mohegan’s with her. She’ll be fine.” Jack hops in the back seat of a Toyota.

Cringing at the sound of men screaming inside the ice cream parlor, I ease my arse behind the wheel.

Then, from out of nowhere, Moishe scoots under me. Front paws on the dashboard, he urges us on. “Mew, mew, mew, mew.”

“Couldn’t agree more, buddy.” Me cat’s gone bloomin’ bonkers. As I turn on the ignition, Fialko opens the glove compartment, pulls out two comm units, and nudges me to take one.

“You blokes think of everything.” If only he could explain how to navigate through this bleedin’ pea soup. Earbud inserted, I start talking. “Slate, you with me?”

“Affirmative. Is Jack with you?” The lack of alarm in the commander’s voice reminds me of my dad but other than their cool under pressure, the two couldn’t be more dissimilar. My father believes himself Robin Hood while Slate runs a highly successful security company.

“Good copy.” Head back in the game, my foot lowers on the accelerator.

“Excellent, transmitting safehouse coordinates now.”

“What about the women and Jordan?”

Chest tight, my heart stutters until the Patten man responds. “Everyone’s fine. I repeat, all are safe. I’ll ping your team and keep them in the loop. Slate out.”

Beams on low, I creep forward. About a hundred feet from the building, the wind clears the fog, and the edge of the road becomes clear.
