Chapter 17

THINGS WERE QUIET AT the office the next day, so I managed to get off work right on time. I made a quick stop for groceries on the way home and was just unpacking the last bag when Chance started barking. A moment later there was a light knock on the front door. I approached it warily. I wasn’t expecting company and had really been looking forward to a night of vegging in front of the TV. After looking through the peephole, I quickly opened the door.

“So, long time no see,” I commented, eyebrows raised as I stared at my best friend and neighbor, Emily. Petite and pretty, Emily was blessed with gorgeous long, dark hair and delicate features. She could easily be considered an exotic beauty, except for the black rimmed glasses she wore, which gave her a kind of geeky appearance.

I was still feeling a little miffed that she hadn’t shared any of the specifics about her trip with me before she’d left town, but I was relieved to have her back so managed to get over my wounded pride. Besides, she was holding a plate of her famous chocolate frosted brownies. I invited her in and quickly put on a pot of coffee (aside from milk, the only acceptable beverage to have with brownies).

“It’s really nice of you to bring these over,” I said between bites after we had settled at the dining room table.

“I just wanted to thank you for taking care of Buttons while we were gone,” she responded brightly.

“I think in the scheme of things, I still owe you a few hundred days of dog sitting to repay you for all of the times you’ve helped me out with Chance,” I reminded her. “So, how was your trip?”

“Actually, it was good. Very good. In fact, that’s part of the reason I wanted to come over here and talk to you.”

I focused my eyes on my coffee cup. I had a feeling that I wasn’t going to like what she was about to tell me. “Really, about what?”

She took a deep breath, then on the exhale said quickly, “Joe got a job offer in Seattle, and he can’t afford to pass it up.”

I took a moment to gather my thoughts, then being in full denial mode I commented, “That is quite a long commute, but I suppose some people make it work.”

“Sara, the kids and I are going with Joe. It’s a huge promotion, and he’ll be making a lot more money. I really don’t want to leave here, but—”

I sat perfectly still, letting her words sink in. I wanted to scream NOOO! but instead decided to point out the obvious.

“If you move, who’s going to take care of Buttons for you. And who’ll take care of Chance for me?”

She sat back and giggled nervously, “That’s your biggest concern?”

“No, my biggest concern is that my best friend is leaving, and I don’t want her to go,” I said forlornly.

She looked at me solemnly, “You know, nowadays there are inventions like telephones and computers.
