FIGURE 7.4: Trefoil brooch from Hafurbjarnarstaðir, the shape of the brooch emerged in the Frankish world generally decorated with acanthus leaves. Viking raiders brought the style back to Scandinavia where it was reinterpreted by local jewelers and decorated with Norse animal art. In the British Isles, this style of brooch was modified further to incorporate, such as this one, Celtic motifs. A parallel to this one can be found in Jarlshof, Shetland. Illustration: M. Hayeur Smith.

At the site of Kroppur, in Eyjafjarðarsýsla, two burials—male and female—were found. The female burial contained a bronze ringed pin of Scandinavian type (Patersen C), as well as a strap end (Figure 7.5) similar to another found in a Viking burial at Kneep in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides.39

The tradition of integrating a small belt into female dress may have originated in the British Isles and have been brought to Iceland by settlers from Scotland.40

Other Hiberno-Norse material found in Iceland include Irish ringed pins, small copper alloy bells with parallels found across the British Isles, jewelry made of shale from England, belt straps and strap ends, and sword hilts decorated with Anglo-Saxon ornament and silver inlay.41
